Girl In Pink

Oil on a 7x5 archival canvas panel.
The photo from which this painting was made comes from Angie at the WDE...Wet Canvas.

Once again I made myself try a different approach. I challenged myself to Paint much looser...Keep edges soft...Underplay detail...Keep the value range higher...Keep colors softer, to fit the subject of the little girl in pink.

I am very pleasantly surprised by the outcome! What do you think?

Cloud Gate Gown

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

This is yet another submission by me to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks. It's a fun challenge...she puts up a different photo each Wed. night. Artists from all over submit their renditions of it. The variety and creativity is both amazing and educational.

The painting is of Cloud Gate Sculpture in Millennium Park, Chicago. It is also known as 'The Bean'. It has the appearance of a huge mirrored bean. Quite a tourist attraction.

It wasn't easy to paint beacuse of the twisted, contorted images in the reflection. My solution was to simply 'paint what I see'...not 'how I think it should be'. It was great fun to do. Hope that you enjoy it too.

Longhorn Steer

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
The reference photo was supplied by Susan, the hostess for this week's WDE at Wet Canvas.
Somehow, I got started doing a cow a month on my blog. This long-horned dude will fill the bill for September.
I like the portrait effect against the dark background...it really forces the attention on the subject, and produces a huge dramatic effect.

White Pumpkins

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
Here's another one from Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks.
These are white pumpkins so they really made me search for the right colors...no typical orange here....no siree. I splashed the paint on thick and had a good ol' time. Hope ya enjoy it!

Ohio Sunset

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
First of all, thanks, Mary, for the great WDE photos.. I liked the Amish haystack from southeastern Ohio...I've seen plenty of 'em up here in northeastern OH.
I tried to set the scene in a sunset by completely relying upon my memory of past sunsets I have enjoyed. Hope this painting wil bring back a pleasant memory to you.
Hmmm...do ya think that haystack is toooo dead center? I was hoping it might work there... on account of all the counter-balancing going on with the background elements.

White Horse

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
A white subject was irresistabe to paint...it's been a while since I've done one. This is one of the famous white horses of Provence; when they are born, they are dark, and change color as they mature.
This photo was graciously supplied by Tressa for the WDE (Week End Drawing Event).

I don't have a new painting to post right now. There should definitely be one tomorrow.
But I had a real honor today when Kim Barker over at Top Artists' Directory sent me an email saying that I was selected as Featured Artist this week! Stop over and check the site out. Thank you, Kim. You are indeed a hard working lady.

Landscape-Acrylic

Acrylic on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
This is practically a nocturnal. The first glimpse of dawn.
Thought I would run something different by ya and see what you think. I may go back in and lighten this scene considerably. I was a little surprised at how dark it was when I saw it on the moniter. It's still so freshly done that my mind hasn't stepped back to weigh whether I like it or not. Let me know what you think. I appreciate honest critique.

Swim Team-Ducklings

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
I participated once again in the WDE at Wet Canvas. Valri supplied the reference photos.
I chose the gaggle of ducklings because of the strong side lighting. Most of the colors are actually mixes of complements to produce subtly colored grays... I always need practice in that. There is a lot of natural excitement in this picture from the little guys' interaction.

Acrylic Landscape

Acrylic on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
A little painting I think of as a "Fantasyscape". It was done by applying very wet acrylic pools-letting some run together-helping others to blend with a brush or fingers. I watched what slowly evolved on the canvas and started to identify what resembled trees, clouds, etc. Then I finished out what the painting had 'given' me. In other words it more or less painted itself with a pinch of encouragement from me.

Wally-Silver Schnauzer ...Finished

Here's the fourth in my series of progression shots of Wally the Sliver Schnauzer. Bonnie and Bob (who are owned by Wally) are just super to work with. It has been a truly enjoyable experience to email them progress shots and work on their suggestions.

In my last post of this project, I hadn't yet decided on a background. I had previously taken some reference shots of their gorgeous backyard floral garden. From those, I chose the fence and roses. For this fourth step I laid in the background, worked on the fur, and developed the contrast.

The fifth and final step....I developed the fur in more detail and adjusted the color. More accurate color was applied to the fence and roses, while still keeping them under played so that it wouldn't compete with the main focal point, Wally.

I tuned up the color intensity and contrast of the grass to best show off Wally. Bits of the original red toned canvas were allowed to peek through here and there. This helps to unify and harmonize the painting.

There, you have it...Wally from beginning to end. Acrylic on a 14x11 stretched canvas. I hope you all enjoyed the trip...I did. And a big thank you to Bonnie and Bob! Enjoy your painting!

Wally-Silver Schnauzer

A couple of great people asked me to do a painting of their best friend. So with their permission I will be posting the progress shots as I proceed. When I do a pet portrait, I like to have the client take part in the process, so I send them progress shots and invite their suggestions as I go along...I find it to be a tremendous help. The painting will be acrylic on a 14x11 stretched canvas.

1...The Drawing...
I like to prime my canvas to a mid value using black and white gesso...leaving it not over blended, but marbled. I then tint the surface with a warm mixture of thinned acrylic...mainly alizarin crimson. In the case of a portrait, I do a drawing on paper then transfer it onto the canvas by using pencil rubbed paper. The drawing is then restated using a thinned mix of alizarin & Ultra. blue.

2...Here, I'm laying in fur tones made of Ultra. blue & Burnt Sienna & white...with occasional Thalo blue, Aliz. Crimson & Diox. Purple. I keep it all in the lower scale of mid range value. Don't forget to follow the direction of the fur growth. Plus, the important darks are placed as accurately as possible.

3...More of the same for step three. Here I start to try to get a feel for a background. Strange as it may seem, I still haven't selected a background at this point. My friends , Bob and Bonnie, are super gardeners and have a backyard of flowers that is amazing. I have a lot of excellent photos which I took myself and some which she has sent me. I plan on using one of those as a backdrop for Wally.

That's it for now. More is on the way. Keep checking back for the next developments. Till next time.......

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.

It feels good to be posting again. I've been under the weather from something, but feeling a lot better now.

I'm always on the look-out for something a bit different. With that in mind, I really abandoned detail with this painting. I grabbed for emotive color and application. Painting knife and brush were both used. Hope y'all like it!

Colorful Acrylic Figures

Acrylic on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
This painting was done from a reference photo provided by Roger for the WDE (weekend drawing event) on Wet Canvas. Roger issued a challenge this week: Pick one (or more) of the images with figures in and do them with just a few lines, strokes or whatever your medium requires of you. The challenge is to do the figures as simply as your medium will allow. No rubbing out, doing over etc. Make it as short and sweet as your medium will allow.

This is my answer to the challenge. It's acrylic on a 7x5 archival canvas panel. I first covered the canvas with unblended white and black gesso for a marbled effect. Then I toned it with various colors (some muted and dark, others high chroma and bright}.
This painting is unique for me....I didn't use any white paint at all. The light that is visible is the gesso shining through colorful transparent paint.
I got the first figure by painting negatively...Same for the remaining two plus colorful outlines. The area within the figures is the original toned canvas. I enjoyed doing this one .

Mountain Stream

Acrylic on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
This painting is an experiment for me. Some areas have multiple layers of thinned acrylic...other ares are thick and opaque. That's the fun part of using acrylics...the layering can be done in one quick setting. I changed the lighting from the reference plus idealized the colors.
