Father, Forgive Them

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.

I still feel a bit down with my back/COPD. I had a painting underway for today, but couldn't complete it on time. So, here's one I originally posted in 2009.

I started this painting without much pre planning. Each element was added as a separate, last minute, after-thought ...the light halo glow...the crown of thorns...the stream of blood... the cross against the foreboding sky.

Almost as if it painted itself, as they say. Psssst... Between you and me, I believe that sometimes He takes a hand in it. He paints it...I just hold the brush. I call it PUI..."painting under the influence".

I wish you all a happy and blessed Easter. Please remember the true meaning. Keep love and hope alive in your hearts.....The best is yet to come.

Statue Admirer-Pigeon

 Close ups

Standard acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Oty was the gracious hostess.

Although these birds are scorned as a pest, I can't help but to admire the feather markings and shiny iridescent heads of pigeons. They are really a beautiful bird.

This is standard acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel. Basically the same process as the previous two weeks. Many layers of thinned acrylic over textured gesso.
I added a touch of black pen and colored pencil just to "kick up" a few spots.

Evolution-American Crocodile

 Close ups

Acrylic on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Li was the gracious hostess.

I chose this sunning American Crocodile.

This is standard acrylic on hardboard. I was happy with last week's painting, so I tried this one in the same manner. Black and gray gesso loosely blended with a painting knife...leaving the knife marks and a marbled gesso. Then I applied thinned acrylic of different colors in random patches. Did the drawing, then painted with many thin layers. I also used a Pitt Pen sparingly for emphasis in select areas. I tried to inject more color than the dull gray hide that was pictured.

I thought of how the croc has evolved and has been around for millions of years. I was thinking this as I watched the painting evolve under the brush.
Hope you like it.

Safe Harbor-Calf and Cow

Close up

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Christine was the gracious hostess.

I liked the attitude of the little one feeling safety behind Mama!
I first toned the panel with red acrylic. Then I pushed the color and applied the paint thickly in select places. This is all brush..no painting knife.

The Heartthrob-Scarlet Macaw

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Dewi was the gracious hostess.

I've painted this scarlet macaw a number of times...just can't resist! Here, he looks very confident and in love with himself...Lol!

This is oil on a 7x5 canvas panel. I first toned the panel with a red for a mid value starting point. That allows me to paint up or down in value and have something to judge it against. Works pretty well.

Got My Eye On Ya-Toby-Dog Portrait

 Close ups

Golden Open Acrylics on a 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. June was the gracious hostess.

I'm not at all used to these open acrylics...they fall between regular fast drying acrylics (which I'm used to) and oils (which I really like) in how they handle for me. Once I got familiar with them, they would be a joy to use.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Warm Summer Thoughts-Cow

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

Ah...This one is painted just because I felt like painting it....not in answer to a challenge or a group event. Feels good to do that once in awhile.
I have been asked to paint another cow from some time back. So here it is. There's something about a cow's face that seems so inquisitive and innocent.
I had fun pushing the colors and strength of light source for this one.
Hope ya like it!:)

Chug A Lug- Cow

This cow is chug a lugging from the tank...Hmmm...Wonder if that's champagne?? Happy New Year everyone!

I singled out a cow from the herd. The multi colored head was a challenge to paint.

I enjoyed laying the lights on thickly.

Christmas Decorator-Terrier

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the gracious hostess.

This little guy's name is Snowball. I changed the reference to put him into a Christmas setting.
In an attempt to keep it fresh and avoid overworking, I loaded the brush...made the stroke...went back and loaded again, etc. A stroke laid = a stroke stayed.

Street Jam-Musicians

 Close ups

This is acrylic on a 5x7 smooth Gessoed Art Board by Speedball.

Something a little different for a change.
The surface of this board is very smooth and non absorbent. I started it with colorful random washes...watching how they swirled and puddled on the slick surface. I applied thicker acrylics in some select areas. I like the expressionist color and paint movement.
I also used a black Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.
This technique was very freeing and I enjoyed it!

Evening Stroll-Cityscape

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Wendy was the gracious hostess.

I rarely try a cityscape...and don't think I've ever tried a nocturnal scene. So here I go, out of my comfort zone.
I was very impressed by Voka and his "spontaneous art" , a link that Wendy suggested. The night scene also reminded me of Doug Dawson and his great pastel work. I tried to channel a bit of each of them for this piece.
The painting evolved quite a ways from the reference pic. I was just concentrating on colors and forms. It sure was interesting.

This is oil on a 7x5 canvas panel. (It was painted over my dragonfly flop of a few weeks back.)
