Sun Fun-Little Girl Figurative

 Close ups

Acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Marianne was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of great photos! This is her daughter making memories in a field of flowers. Oh to be young again!
Her challenge was to use negative painting (painting around the object). For more information about this technique, check out artist Linda Kemp.
Along with the acrylics, I used just a slight touch of ink from a uniPin and an even slighter touch of colored pencil for the features.
Make sure you check back...the finish of the double child portrait from Wednesday will be posted soon.

John 17:1      “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Spring Has Sprung-Floral Landscape

 Close Ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas board.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Susan was the gracious hostess.

Don't pay the ransom Honey, I escaped! Lol!
Sorry...It feels as though I haven' posted in a looooong time. I have been down in plenty of pain since the 14th. I bent over and sneezed and pulled a muscle in my back...intense pain!
That in turn affected the muscles involved with my breathing. All that complicated my COPD. But I'm finally coming back with Ibuprofen.
I had a painting started from last week....I'll finish it sometime later.

Thanks for the great pics, Susan!
I cut loose with a Springtime landscape.

Exploring The Floral-Flowers

 Close ups

 Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess.

I decided on the flowers. Actually, I used the reference as a springboard to get the painting started. From there on, I stopped looking at the photo and just developed it by playing with color and using the painting knife. A lot of fun.
I first applied black gesso...love that stuff!

I came up with a term which is completely my own invention! It's "artful departure". Ain't that a beaut??? It means don't let the subject source, whether real life or photo, get in the way of creating a painting. I think the duty of an artist is to create rather than replicate. But then, that's just my humble opinion.

Roses

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Patricia was the gracious hostess.

I chose those roses this week. My goal was to play with broken edges. This was done by first using brushes...then a paint shaper to move paint and influence the edges...then painting knife. I like the resulting impressionistic and active surface this technique brought about.
This technique was developed by a very sharing blogger Julie Ford Oliver.

C&C welcome. Thanks for taking a peek and I appreciate your comments.

Flower Power-Wisteria

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess.
The reference photos were great. I really had a hard time choosing. The animals were very tempting...but wanting to try another floral, I picked the wisteria.

Tried to keep it expressive, painterly, and textured. Don't know if I succeeded, but it was fun trying.

Dragonfly

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Oty was the gracious hostess.

I took a stab at a dragonfly reference photo. My aim was to use thick, expressive, paint. Not too sure as to how successful I was. I invented a water lily bud for it to cling to and gave the background the general look of a lily pond.
Had to wipe the flower off completely once. Then I found it's difficult to show transparent wings against a dark background.
Anyhow I fiddled with it way too long, so here it is.
I would appreciate your input on this one.

Spring Memories-Lilac

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Donna was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo!

I just had to try those lilacs! I'm not a floral painter by any means, but I really like the Springtime feelings this flower generates. I have some in my yard and they're only there for about two weeks tops. You have to look fast and enjoy them for the short time they're around. Sort of a mini lesson on life in general.

This is on a 7x5 canvas panel. A little brush and a lot of palette knife!

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting!

This painting was influenced by the style of the great
innovative artist, Julie Ford Oliver.

Holding More Than Flowers-Vase

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to the Gift Challenge II at DPW posted by the extraordinary artist, Abbey Ryan .
Abbey suggested to paint something that you feel connected to or has meaning for you because someone gave it to you.
This is a simple little vase with Greek (I think) figures. My Mother loved the little vase, and now I love the many recollections it holds.

Floral Glory #2

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
I just couldn't leave my first entry to the DPW Challenge alone. I used it as a jumping off point for this one . I added more colorful paint on top of the original to arrive at this. Hope I helped it. Whenever I paint past a good stopping point, I always get the feeling I'm probably sacrificing a painting I like for an unknown result.

Floral Glory

Close ups

They've just switched to the new Blogger interface. I haven't figured how to do anything yet!!! AAAAggHHH!

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Cropping Challenge at DPW posted by Rita Kirkman.
Rita is a SUPER artist! She posted a photo showing a large area with way too much information. Her instructions were: " I challenge you to simplify this photo by picking a part to paint by cropping it out"

I hope they don't revoke my artistic license for this. I like working from a close crop. But not much color was evident in the crop. So I had to do a lot of inventing. It is actually my favorite way to work. I came up with a rule ( I think it's my own, at least the wording is)..."Don't let a photograph get in the way of your painting."
Thank you for this challenge, Rita! I am a great admirer of your work!

Easter Pinup-Keeta The Cat

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my painting for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Shar was the gracious hostess this week who supplied the reference photos. This was done from a picture of her cat, Keeta.
Keeta was decked out in the Easter bonnet in the photo in an inside setting. I added the floral setting from another reference photo. I like how it all came together.
I managed to give it plenty of texture and color.
Hope you all like it!

Freewheeling Floral

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Mary was the gracious host.

I was attracted to the elements within this composition.
I first coated the board with black gesso. I started off by indicating the elements subtly and keeping them thin and dark. This served to act as a foundation. The paints were applied thicker and with more color in the next step. Finally, I laid in selected leaves, flowers, and parts of the wheel really thickly for the most impact.
Thanks for taking a look!

Orchids

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my submission to the WDE at Wet Canvas. The reference photo was supplied by Dewi.

Not normally a floral painter, I went for these beautifully colored orchids. Thought that they make an interesting composition.

The board was first covered in black gesso. I used a touch of acrylic pthalo blue to the gesso to darken it even further. I like how it makes the color pop right from the start!

Peugeot Planter

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here's my submission to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The photo showed an abandoned/retired 1938 Peugeot 202 truck in France. The photo was graciously supplied by Robert...Thanks Robert!!

I really thought long and hard before tackling this one. The old truck was a challenge for me with the mechanical straight lines and curves...the sort of thing I usually avoid.

It looked sad all alone and abandoned, so I brought a little cheer into it's life by doing what nature does...turn it into a planter. A nice contrast between organic and inorganic--man and nature.
