Memorial Day 2011

Memorial Day 2011

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Please take some time today to quietly thank God for the multitude of servicemen and women who gave their all for this nation we are so blessed to be living in.

When you are out and about and you see the military , don't be embarrassed to thank them personally for all they do.

Remember always to praise and pray. Praise our finest young citizens in the service...And pray for peace.

Progressive Cow

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The host, Connie, provided the photos.

The very photo of this cow reminded me of a Connie van Winnsen style painting. Check her site out.
I have been a real fan of her art for quite a few years. So, in tribute to her I attempted this cow more or less in her style. Looking at it now, I see that perhaps some of the colors may need a higher chroma.
Anyhow, this is a tribute from me, Connie.

Life Lessons-Canada Goose

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW Challenge. This is the Value Challenge presented by Carol Marine. It went like this: For you guys using oil, paint on a burnt umber ground, wipe it down to a mid value, paint in the darks, and wipe out for lights (with paper towel or q-tips - try dipping in mineral spirits for the really white stuff). Use ONLY burnt umber (or raw umber if that’s all you have) - no white!!!

I painted on my standard 5x7 factory gessoed hardboard using burnt umber. Normally I add my own textured gesso. But this time I used the very smooth finish knowing it would be easy to wipe back to the light value. But the darker values slid around like grease and were really difficult to nail down. Anyway, here it is. A fine learning experience.

Fallen Star-Water Lily

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The host, Robert, provided the photos.

Don't let the strange title throw ya. According to an Indian legend, the water lily was once a star. It fell from the sky on the water and changed into a flower. Come to think of it, it does resemble a star. For me, it certainly is the star attraction of a pond.

I really like the color combo of Thio Violet with the accompanying greens, blue, and touch of yellow.

Break Me Off A Piece Of That Blankety Blank Bar-Cat

This is my contribution to this week's DPW Challenge. It was hosted by the fabulous artist, Dreama Tolle Perry. She posted a photo of this cat. It will be great fun to see the many creative versions that are sure to come!

Once again I used the rounds in place of the usual flat brushes. I smooshed the paint on thickly and looked for spots where I could push the color and be a bit creative with it. I loved trying to render that strong sidelight!
All in all, I'm happy with it. Plenty of fun!

The Sentinel-Canada Goose

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess, Lin, provided the photos.
I chose the Canada Goose who looks so alert. Geese elect a guard, or a sentinel, to watch out for predators while the rest of the flock is busy attending to business such as feeding. Quite a responsibility. This guy looks like he's up to the task.

This is oil on a 7x5 hardboard. I tried to push the color and be generous with the paint. I switched brushes from my usual flats to rounds that use to be my mainstay some time ago. Guess what? I like 'em all over again!

Salad Fixins-Vegetable Still Life

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW Challenge. It was hosted by the fine artist, Diane Mannion.

This week's challenge was to paint a vegetable from life. Direct painting. Take a break from those photos. Not only will this be good practice but healthy too. Really look at your subject, study it closely and you'll see colors and shapes you never noticed before. Have fun with it and when you're finished... eat your subject.
I did as instructed and the resulting salad was delicious!

Sneak a peek at this Peke! When I snuck a peek, I knew I just had to try him/her.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Angie was the hostess and graciously supplied the reference photos. Thanks, Angie!

I had fun with the thick, textured paint and the many colors I added to the "white" fur.

Thanks for peeking!

Color Me Happy

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW Challenge. It was hosted by the fine artist, Carol Marine.
The challenge was to paint a self portrait....Those very words cause me to cringe a bit. I had done a few in the dim past but I could always find a more appealing subject virtually anywhere! For example, it could be anything on a table...anything in the yard...anything stuck to the bottom of a theater seat...Lol...Anything.

I pushed the colors on this one to add interest and spirit. I tried to keep it fun.
I titled it "Color Me Happy". Now that title sounds a little innocuous. I kinda favor title #2.."It's Hard To Be Humble". Based on the Mac Davis tune of the same name.

Part of the chorus goes like this:
"Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror
'cos I get better looking each day"

The Thinker-Red Fox

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my painting for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Wendy was the hostess graciously supplied the reference photos.

The red fox appealed to me...looking so deep in thought. I loved the sharp sunlight on the head and ears. The background is pure imagination. I used it as a chance to play with loose, impasto, colorful blobs of paint on the end of the brush and the palette knife.

Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoyed it!
