Sorry...It feels as though I haven' posted in a looooong time. I have been down in plenty of pain since the 14th. I bent over and sneezed and pulled a muscle in my back...intense pain!
That in turn affected the muscles involved with my breathing. All that complicated my COPD. But I'm finally coming back with Ibuprofen.  
I had a painting started from last week....I'll finish it sometime later.

It's been so long, I had nearly forgotten how much fun it is to paint in acrylic!
A lot of wet into wet color blending....then a few thick impasto bits for punctuation!

This is my contribution to The Paint Your Muse Challenge at DPW posted by Robin Peterson.
Robin suggested: Consciously identify what inspires you about the subject. Write down in a single word what you plan to communicate in paint then make that the title of your painting.

This is a scene from Yosemite. His creation is all around us. From the smallest flower to the most gigantic mountains. All wondrously designed.
Then we try to create on our canvases what what is in front of our eyes. What a wondrous world!!

This painting was done with a painting knife. Not sure about the degree of success....but plenty of fun just the same!!

This is the photo.
I zoomed in to the far middle background...the small bit of exposed water with ducks/geese around it.
My goal for this piece was to keep it extremely loose and to imply detail. I used my trusty painting knife to advance the foreground.
I have also have begun exploring a technique developed by a very skillful artist, Julie Ford Oliver.
I have merely scratched the surface of this process. She calls it fracturing...Check her out...amazing work!

This is my contribution to this week's The Rectangle Challenge posted by Mary Douglas.

The challenge was to build up your painting through a series of rectangles. A great way to simplify.
I inadvertently didn't follow the instructions to the letter. I wasn't aware of this until I went back and rechecked the instructions after I completed this submission.

This is a redo of the Old Mill Challenge of June 25.

Nearer To Thee- Landscape

I was really tempted to try a great looking cat (jaguar, I think), but I was still seeing spots from last week's cheetah.

This is Mount Rundle in Alberta, Canada. Gorgeous scenes like this remind me of the constant presence of our Creator. The mountains seem to be in symbolic prayer to the Heavens.

This is my interpretation of the photo to the DPW Old Mill Challenge.
The challenge was issued by artist Jean Nelson , who wrote:
"Often we encounter a scene when either en plein air painting, or from a photo that has potential to be a nice painting. But it needs to be cleaned up a bit, maybe a seasonal change, information deleted or added, cropping, etc.. This photo is just that kind of challenge. It has potential, but needs the imagination of the artist to make it an interesting painting."

Easter Pinup-Keeta The Cat

This is my painting for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Shar was the gracious hostess this week who supplied the reference photos. This was done from a picture of her cat, Keeta.
Keeta was decked out in the Easter bonnet in the photo in an inside setting. I added the floral setting from another reference photo. I like how it all came together.
I managed to give it plenty of texture and color.

Loved piling the paint on with brush and palette knife.

This picture struck me as a road that had been walked by generations of people. Each traveling in their own thoughts, yet all very similar. Then I thought of the many roads Jesus traveled...and how we all should strive to walk in His light.
Such are the confessions of my meandering mind...Lol.

When it came to landscape paintings, I always kinda drug my feet. I'd think... too much information/details in front of me. Always a bit intimidated I suppose.

But more and more I see that there's a world of creative freedom when doing a landscape.
With that in mind, I handled this one almost like an abstract (something else I tend to avoid..). In doing this one, I felt the freedom! Just being involved in balancing colors...line control...achieving a focal point. Just PAINTING!

Happy New Year, friends! I hope this will be a good one for you. I'm sure the upcoming year will require many, many, wise decisions-both on our part and the government's ...thus the owl.

About this painting...first the panel was coated with a mixture of white and black gesso to make a dark value gray. I made sure to leave plenty of brush stokes, which later will enrich the painting.
Then thinned acrylic pthalo blue and alizarin crimson were applied. Some will peek through in the finished piece. I feel this harmonizes and energizes the painting.
Most all the paint strokes are put on thinly. Some strokes are lightly dragged across the textured primer. This allows the paint to be picked up by the ridges in the gesso...giving a delicate texture to the feathers.
Around the focal point of the eyes, I applied the paint thickly, usually in a single stroke to maintain the feel.
At the moment I'm happy with it. Hope ya'll enjoy it!

This is my late contribution to WDE at Wet Canvas. Mike was the host and provided the great photo for this piece. Thank you, Mike!
Lake Louise is Canada's "Diamond in the Wilderness," and the "Hiking Capital of Canada". This area offers a tremendous diversity of recreational and sightseeing opportunities.

I decided to go with a landscape for the freedom it offers. After doing some figuratives and a pet portrait, it felt good not to have to work so tightly.
I just had a good time playing with the color on this one.

I first toned the support with thinned alizarin crimson. Bits of it peek throughout the painting. I think that this harmonizes the painting plus adds excitement for the eye.
