Father, Forgive Them

I still feel a bit down with my back/COPD. I had a painting underway for today, but couldn't complete it on time. So, here's one I originally posted in 2009.

I started this painting without much pre planning. Each element was added as a separate, last minute, after-thought ...the light halo glow...the crown of thorns...the stream of blood... the cross against the foreboding sky.

Almost as if it painted itself, as they say. Psssst... Between you and me, I believe that sometimes He takes a hand in it. He paints it...I just hold the brush. I call it PUI..."painting under the influence".

This is my submission to the DPW Challenge. This week, it's hosted by that tremendous artist, Carol Marine.

Loved piling the paint on with brush and palette knife.

This picture struck me as a road that had been walked by generations of people. Each traveling in their own thoughts, yet all very similar. Then I thought of the many roads Jesus traveled...and how we all should strive to walk in His light.
Such are the confessions of my meandering mind...Lol.

Flower Power-Water Lilies

This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean supplied the reference photo.

This is in answer to the super color challenge put forth on WDE this week. It's something I've had my in mind for quite a long time. To add extreme color, including color "surprises", to a subject to energize and "excite" the painting.
I really enjoyed the process.

The hardboard first received a coat of black gesso. Love that black gesso...I call it "black magic" the way it makes colors "pop" from the very first strokes.
I used a palette knife and brush for the textured paint.

When it came to landscape paintings, I always kinda drug my feet. I'd think... too much information/details in front of me. Always a bit intimidated I suppose.

But more and more I see that there's a world of creative freedom when doing a landscape.
With that in mind, I handled this one almost like an abstract (something else I tend to avoid..). In doing this one, I felt the freedom! Just being involved in balancing colors...line control...achieving a focal point. Just PAINTING!

This is my contribution to the WDE at Wet Canvas. Catherine was the gracious host and supplied the images. This is actually the combo of two photos. One with the kid and one of the flowers. I decided to combine them for storyline and comic value.

I first toned it with red acrylic. Much of it shows in the upper right. Laying down the impasto paint is always fun! I hope you all like it!

My Old Flame-Zippo

This is my submission to this week's DPW Challenge. The reference photo was supplied by a really fine artist, Michael Naples. Make sure you check out his blog.

As you can see, this is the famous Zippo lighter. The title, "My Old Flame", refers to memories of a past love. And such was the case with my old lighter...or matches...or anything that would light my smoke! As a smoker, I was a true disciple, I was hooked and loved it!
I gave up smoking in Aug. of '07 and have not turned back for even one little ciggie.....But I must to admit my thumb still twitches at the sight of a Zippo.

I loved the challenge of reflective metal...the great contrast...and tackling those straight edges.

Most everyone I know is on a quest to "loosen up" their paintings. Well, that also includes yours truly. I would like to be able to tighten up or loosen up as the situation of the painting demands. I don't believe such a goal is ever attainable....but it's the trying to get there that keeps it interesting.

Freewheeling Floral

I was attracted to the elements within this composition.
I first coated the board with black gesso. I started off by indicating the elements subtly and keeping them thin and dark. This served to act as a foundation. The paints were applied thicker and with more color in the next step. Finally, I laid in selected leaves, flowers, and parts of the wheel really thickly for the most impact.

Oil on 8x12 Canva Paper. Each individual block is approx. 4x4 in.
There's a great new challenge going around! It's the DPW Challenge-Ten Minute Challenge.
The requirements for this particular one was to set a timer for ten min....and paint like crazy. When the timer goes off, STOP! Then reset the timer and start the next painting. Move the subject around, etc. if desired. Do a series of small quick oil sketches with this ten min. limit. Great practice. I'll be doing some more of this on my own in the future.

#1 step...Dribble on white gesso and black gesso. Loosely mix while covering the surface. This results in a textured swirling marble pattern in a gray value.
Apply thinned patches of cad. red lt. and yel. ochre acrylic.
An inspiring support to work on right from the start. Even a drawing on it often looks complete.

Just thought I'd throw this in for the heck of it. By the way...that red at the top of the head and the chin are meant to represent Vincent's hair and beard. Wouldn't want ya to think that's a stub of an ear up there . No animals were harmed in the making of this blog!

I went with a photo of patio furniture and then attempted to create an idyllic spot for it to sit in. I tried to imagine sitting in that cool shade while listening to the birds entertaining me.
It was a lot of fun to invent colors and gob on thick paint in spots.
