My Old Flame-Zippo

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my submission to this week's DPW Challenge. The reference photo was supplied by a really fine artist, Michael Naples. Make sure you check out his blog.

As you can see, this is the famous Zippo lighter. The title, "My Old Flame", refers to memories of a past love. And such was the case with my old lighter...or matches...or anything that would light my smoke! As a smoker, I was a true disciple, I was hooked and loved it!
I gave up smoking in Aug. of '07 and have not turned back for even one little ciggie.....But I must to admit my thumb still twitches at the sight of a Zippo.

I loved the challenge of reflective metal...the great contrast...and tackling those straight edges.

  1. A big Bravo! for your rendition of the challenge. A real stand-out Deano.

  2. I can almost feel the cold weight of this in my hands. Nicely done, Dean!

  3. Nice! Love the name of this as well, and congrats on choosing a healthier lifestyle! (Also thanks for your comments and encouragement on my blog ... I am almost finished with that painting)

    Be blessed today!

  4. So nice Dean, you have mastered all subjects. I haven't painted anything for this yet but I will, I think, lol.

  5. Great job, Dean. I love that background and the reflection.

  6. The reflecting surface of the metal is done wonderfully well Dean, the background accentuates it!
