French Windows

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

I came across these French windows in the Reference Image Library at the great Wet Canvas site. It inspired me to simply cut loose with slashes, dashes, and gobs of lively Spring colors.
I really enjoy doing expressive painting that invites the viewer to hang around and
discover the paint surprises taking place...to interpret.

The Wise Quacks

Left page
Right page
An oil painting for James Parker's book which is a part of The Flying Moleskin Project. The painting on each page is approx. 8"x5". A fellow wildlife fan, James chose wildlife as the theme for his book. Hope you enjoy it, buddy!

Looks as though Mom is taking the class on a field trip. They just left a sidewalk where the little ones played "don't step on any quacks". They are very smart, high achievers...thus my title: "The Wise Quacks".

I added liquin to some of the slower drying colors. As soon as it drys, it'll be off to you Vern!

Fiery Lady

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

The reference for this was for WDE at Wet Canvas and was supplied by Harry. Thanks, Harry!

The emotion, drama, and color of the flamenco dancer were what attracted me this week.
I first applied black gesso for a painting surface. Love that black ground! It makes the colors dance right off the bat....(fits this subject pretty well...Lol.)

I tried to make sure that I used the brightest color, greatest contrast, and thickest paint for the focal area...the head and upper torso.

My prize was a 10"x7.5" serigraphy print titled "Testament". Below.

Thanks, Don! I shall treasure it!

Colorado Church

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

There's a new challenge in town! Well...maybe not in town...I mean the blogosphere!
Lee is a talented artist with many talents in technology also. He is in charge of the A Day Not Wasted blog and is going to post a new challenge once a month. Way to go. Lee!

He photographed this church in Colorado using a high dynamic range (HDR) photography process to capture the colors. Hi photos are great to paint from!

It was great fun trying to capture the dappled sunlight showing through the shadow.
Above all, it just absolutely felt right to paint a church on Sunday!!

Cat Scan

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to WDE at Wet Canvas. The cat is Keeta and belongs to Sharron, this week's hostess.

I picked Keeta just to paint those eyes!
First I toned the board with red acrylic. I tried to keep the strokes thick and painterly.
Thanks for looking!

Winged Emerald--St. Patrick's Day

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my second submission to James Parker's Windows To The Words Challenge. This challenge is for March, so there's still some time to join in. Come on in...the water's fine! Check Mr. Parker's blogs out! You'll have a good time at his blogs!

Happy St Patrick's Day everyone! If this holiday had to adopt an official bird, I would nominate the hummingbird in all his fluorescent green glory!
I may have gone a little crazy with the color, but this painting said, "Go ahead!" Enjoy!

Bighorn Sheep-"High Light"

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

Gary Keimig is a great Wyoming artist. His world is filled with eyepopping scenery and wildlife subjects. He has offered up a photo as a fun challenge to fellow artists. Check it out here. I just could not resist doing this magnificent bighorn sheep!

I really like how this one turned out! It has the drama of light. Thanks for looking. :-P

Iris Garden

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.

Ahh...Spring is just around the corner!! My all time favorite time of year. Warmth...Growth...Life! Thank you, God, for allowing me to experience another Spring.

Once again, as I did last week ( the coyote painting Fri., March 5th) , toward the last of the painting, I used the brush much like a painting knife. Load a gob of under mixed paint and slide it unto the canvas with one swipe...go back and re load. Makes for good texture and paint mix surprises.

The source photo was supplied by Helen for the WDE at Wet Canvas.

Max--Shitzu

Close ups

Acrylic on 8x10 hardboard.

This little bundle of energy belongs to my friend and neighbor, Jack. Or should I say that he and his family belong to Max? They've had him only a few months.
Jack lives right across the fence from me and I couldn't ask for a better friend. This painting is my meager gift to him for all the help he has given me on maintaining my property.

I had done a painting for him as a Christmas gift to his wife in Dec. '08. Here it is for comparison. I made the new painting in the same media and size, with compatible colors so the two pieces would go well together on the wall.

Olympic Speedskaters

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

The photo reference for this painting was supplied by Alain for the WDE at Wet Canvas.

Here's something completely new for me! My first ever painting knife effort! It was pretty freeing to swing the knife. Loved the clean up...swipe with a rag and done (how's that for being lazy?).

I must mention here that Don Michael Jr. really helped push me over the edge of procrastination on trying a palette knife painting. Check out his fine, very inspiring, blog.

PS...Dear readers, I have a question. What is the art term for a painting or drawing which doesn't extend completely the edges (as in my painting above)?? Completely slipped my mind. Oldtimers I fear . Thanks.

Lean on Me-Pears

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

These are a couple of pears I bought with a painting in mind. I congratulate myself for remembering to photograph them before scoffing them down.
They remind me of two friends sharing a special moment.

The feeling/style for this piece is quite different from the Coyote previously posted. Not so much impasto texture. Here, I rely more upon painted texture and a smoother style.

Sunny Side Of Life-Coyote

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.

This painting was made from a photo supplied by Alain for the WDE at Wet Canvas.

After I had the basic areas of light and shadow blocked in, I created my own colors for the painting. I Applied the paint thickly from the brush almost as if from a painting knife. I enjoyed creating the impasto texture in spots. Hope you folks enjoy it!

Musing On Monet

Close ups

Oil on a 5x7 archival canvas panel.

Have you ever had the experience of doing a very controlled painting- sign it- then look at your messy paint smeared palette? I have done this many times...and many times I say,"OMG! The palette is a better piece of art than my finished canvas  !!"

On the palette, there are beautiful swirls of color that make me believe the spirit of Claude Monet slipped into the studio and has left a tutorial on how to create gorgeous art.

I attempted to employ his lesson with this painting. Much color mixing is done by picking up several colors with the tip of the brush then applying them directly upon the canvas. I often surprised my eye by what I saw happening. That creates excitement for me that I hope carries over to the viewer! I had fun with this.

Eastern Bluebird

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.

I finally had a chance to partake in the Windows To The Words Challenge. It is run by a real fun guy by the name of James Parker. This challenge is for March, so there's still plenty of time to join in. Come on in...the water's fine! Check his blogs out!

Many of you know by now how much I love to paint birds. So with this painting I return to a favorite subject and even return to a more familiar style.
During my blog surfing, I am exposed to many beautiful and successful styles. These techniques soak in, and little by little, I drift away from the style which had always been more uniquely mine. Well, this return is more me. It was fun to figuratively come home! :-P
