The Explorers
Acrylic on 7x5 hardboard.
Kids having a load of fun in the sun...what a warm picture...a pleasant contrast to the winter weather we're involved in.
I first sketched the scene in ink using a Pitt Artists Pen. Then I applied loose, watery washes of color. I kept going back in with thicker, opaque acrylics to bring it to a finish. I really like this approach on the smooth hardboard.
The photo from which this painting was done was supplied by Briar for this week's WDE.

Boston Terrier
Acrylic on 8x10 hardboard.
This painting was done for my neighbor, Jack. He asked for the painting of his departed dog, Jingles, so that he could surprise his wife with it this Christmas.
Well, Jack is a Godsend of a neighbor who has helped me immeasurably over this summer and fall with many outside tasks which I'm not up to handling. Needless to say I was overjoyed to do this for him.
After Christmas, Jack called to tell me his wife cried after unwrapping it. That is when I breath a sigh of relief and feel a painting successful. The tears of joy are the real pay that matters.

Different Strokes Portrait
Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
This is my submission to the latest challenge on Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks.... a painting of a fellow artist. I was struck by the deep understanding and peace in her eyes...it was my goal to capture that look. Karin threw all the names into a hat and paired them up. So this lady will be painting me....hope she's up to a grueling experience. Every time I look in the mirror I see Elvis and George Clooney. I hope she can get the real me....ummm...or maybe not..heh.

Soul Of A Nation
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is my latest submission to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks. It's a fun challenge...she puts up a different photo each Wed. night. Artists from all over submit their renditions of it. The variety and creativity is both amazing and instructive.
Many years ago, my father earned 50 cents a day wearing footwear that looked exactly like this.
He worked that same job for over fifty years. The title of this piece refers to what the USA was built upon (in my opinion)...hard work, honesty, and a belief in God. I think we need a swift return to those roots.

Cuddles
Acrylic on 18x12 stretched canvas.
I did this painting of a long haired Chihuahua for Jim, a fellow musician. He's an excellent sax player. We played in various bands together for several years. I enjoy rehashing the good times with him... me on guitar, Jim on sax, and Tom on keyboards.
This is a companion piece for one I did for him in '03. I had to go back to my style back then for compatibility.
The first one...done in 2003.

Retired In The Caribbean
This is oils on 5x7 gessoed 1/8" hardboard. I attempted to keep it loose and lively. Most areas contain many closely related colors...this avoids boring the eye. This is my first boat painting. I have always admired other artists' work on this subject.

Twice Tagged
I've been tagged twice! By Jennifer Bellinger and Barbara Pask.
When you've been tagged your supposed to mention who tagged you, then tell 7 things about yourself...I already feel like I'm tattling on my best friend, Lol... gotta remember to keep it clean and wholesome.
Then you're supposed to tag 7 other defenseless souls.
Let's see if I can come up with some printable things about me.....hmmm...
1. I come from a family of 10 siblings...7 brothers & 3 sisters.
2. I've been retired from a day job for a year but still have a heck of a time producing any more paintings than I did before.
3. Two of my favorite things is the smell of fried bacon and fresh coffee in the morning!!
4. One of my favorite movies is "Jaws".
5. I have been married twice. The 1st time is best forgotten. The second time I learned how to love for real. Her name was Kay. She passed away Easter 2004. The good ones always get away...but I'll catch up.
6. I have two li'l toy poodles....or maybe they have me.??.
7. I won the 'Draw Me ' contest many moons ago...I learned more from it than I did at art college. Let's just say that at that time the colleges weren't pushing realism art.
Now for me to tag some folks. These are all very worthy artists. Check 'em out.

She added a new twist with this one...To paint the image upside down. Keep the image/photograph inverted from the start - and when you feel you've gotten about 99% done, invert it right-side up, and give it a few final touches. Resist the urge to perfect it - just use that last 5% of time to tidy it up.
It was different and fun till all the blood started running to my goard and I got all dizzy from standing on my head. Yuk, yuk.

Veteran's Day was yesterday, so I apologize for being late.
This painting was originally posted on my blog on Dec, 11, 2006. Today I found, with great pride, that it was used as an illustration on A Boomer In The Pew...A Baby Boomer's Faith Journey. Check it out.
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. This painting of a praying soldier was done with love and in support of our troops. God bless them.
I gave this painting to my grandson, Joey...He's now a member of the United States Army in Kuwait serving as Chaplain's assistant.

I went retro for this one. This is the style I used almost exclusivly in '04 & '05. A lot of fun and I like the result. A lot of mushy, colorful, paint....sometimes applied with a painting knife and either left as is or worked into with the brush. The idea is to have an exciting surface texture and exciting under- mixed paint. Hope ya like it!
