a MAZING Petals
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to The Rose Challenge at DPW posted by the one and only Carol Marine.
The challenge was to simply paint a rose in close up. And quite a challenge it was.
So beautiful to look at. So sweet to smell. So DIFFICULT to paint!!
The many convolutions of a rose's petals turns into a maze which will in turn twist my point of reference. Was I painting here or there??
Roses are indeed a real challenge for me. ( The problem may well be that I tighten up and attempt a flower portrait instead of a nice loose, painterly, floral.)
Anyhoo...Thanks for a great challenge, Carol!

Good For The Goose- Gander
Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Mary was the hostess who graciously supplied the great reference photos!
I imagined this proud guy to be a gander so the title will make sense.
Some palette knife...some brush.
I tried to go by that saying, " a stroke laid is a stroke stayed." Which means after you lay a stroke down, don't spread it or fuss with it...period. Go ahead and make another stroke. I wasn't entirely successful at it but I tried.
C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

Close ups
This is my contribution to at DPW posted by Eileen McCoy.
Eileen wrote: "Paint using the primary colors: red, yellow and blue as the 3 main areas of your composition."
I painted this Scarlet Macaw with a brush and painting knife. I like the rich, impasto, surface.

Know When To Fold 'Em-Portrait
Deano's Demo
Step #1
I first toned the panel with a warm colored acrylic. Sketched the fellow in, and placed the darks thinly.Step#2
Now I lay in flesh tones and the white beard thickly, sometimes with a painting knife. The strokes indicate the flow of the beard.

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Christine was the hostess who graciously supplied the great reference photos!
The gentleman I chose to paint reminded me of a denizen of the Old West who had played more than a few hands of poker in his time...Thus the title "Know When To Fold 'Em."
That phrase is also an objective I aim for as a painter...knowing when to put the brushes down and stop.
I like to show the journey the painting took. To be able to look down and see the first layer of toning...to see the pencil and sketch marks...to the final rich strokes of rich color that sit on top of it all. I'm happy where I stopped with this one.
Hope ya like it!

Sunflower-Mini Painting
Oil on canvas panel.
Actually this is painted on a 3.5" x 2.5" section of an 8x10 canvas panel. Therefore it might be a little hard to sell...Lol.
This is my contribution to The Paint It Small Challenge at DPW posted by David Lloyd.
David suggested that we paint one in the ACEO size. The ACEO (2.5 x 3.5) market continues to blossom, and some galleries host yearly competitions and exclusive exhibitions dedicated to miniature works.
These would be a great size to keep your hand in painting daily when time is scarce.

Splish Splash-Figurative
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Marianne was the hostess who graciously supplied the great reference photos!
I chose the two water nymphs because I thought it was a great opportunity to practice with my painting knife. I like the swirling color blends a knife can achieve for the water. The figures were done with brushes. I feel as if I'm beginning to learn a little about using the painting knife.
This was painted over a red ground. I like how it peeks through and automatically harmonizes and energizes a painting.
Thanks for looking and commenting. You folks keep me on the right track!

Creation-Yosemite Landscape
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is my contribution to The Paint Your Muse Challenge at DPW posted by Robin Peterson.
Robin suggested: Consciously identify what inspires you about the subject. Write down in a single word what you plan to communicate in paint then make that the title of your painting.
This is a scene from Yosemite. His creation is all around us. From the smallest flower to the most gigantic mountains. All wondrously designed.
Then we try to create on our canvases what what is in front of our eyes. What a wondrous world!!
This painting was done with a painting knife. Not sure about the degree of success....but plenty of fun just the same!!

Muz-Nuz-Horses
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Maureen was the hostess who supplied a lot of great reference photos!
I picked the two young horses...I believe they're called yearlings at this stage. Muz-nuz is my invented word for muzzle nuzzling. A pretty endearing shot.
Developing a background is always an interesting challenge to me. This is one that I hope enhances the mood of the painting in an uplifting, colorful way without competing with the subjects.
Hope ya like it! Comments please...

Waterfowl-Landscape
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is my contribution to The Phone Photo Challenge at DPW posted by Elaine Stolt.
Elaine wrote: What makes a good photo doesn't necessarily make a good painting, and vice-versa! Your challenge is to create a painting from this photo I took with my phone. Crop it, change the colors, do what you will, but have fun with it!
This is the photo.
I zoomed in to the far middle background...the small bit of exposed water with ducks/geese around it.
My goal for this piece was to keep it extremely loose and to imply detail. I used my trusty painting knife to advance the foreground.
I have also have begun exploring a technique developed by a very skillful artist, Julie Ford Oliver.
I have merely scratched the surface of this process. She calls it fracturing...Check her out...amazing work!

Happy 236th Birthday!
Acrylic on hardboard.
This painting is a repost from 2009. Still appropriate for today.
The principle of our republic is based on God given rights! Understand, that if America loses God...we lose those rights.
I am proud of the the USA. Look at any country (or person) closely enough and you will see faults. But there's an overwhelming amount to be proud of...not ashamed of.
Happy birthday America!!!! Know that you are still loved!
God bless the USA!
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Please take a minute and listen to this song.
