Splish Splash-Figurative

Close ups

LinkOil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Marianne was the hostess who graciously supplied the great reference photos!

I chose the two water nymphs because I thought it was a great opportunity to practice with my painting knife. I like the swirling color blends a knife can achieve for the water. The figures were done with brushes. I feel as if I'm beginning to learn a little about using the painting knife.

This was painted over a red ground. I like how it peeks through and automatically harmonizes and energizes a painting.

Thanks for looking and commenting. You folks keep me on the right track!

  2. Very lively and pleasant, Dean! You were a great influence on my use of bright grounds! I must admit that I have not tried red as a base colour, though!

  4. I think the way you've done this water is brilliant, Dean. It is so perfect and I can almost see it and hear it through your piece. And to have the figurative action you have just screams "Remember when" and having fun to me. So wonderful!

  6. Hi there Dean!... You more than learned a lot about the value of the palette Knife.

You've mastered "how" the palette knife can be used effectively to support and add structure and texture to an otherwise smooth painting which lacks visual energy and punch!

A beautiful piece Dean!My hat's off to you!

    Good Painting!
    Warmest regards,
    Bruce

Hi Marie! The great advantage about using red as a base color is that it's a mid value color!!! It assists greatly in judging the values you apply whether lighter or darker! :)
