Roses

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is from an image for the WDE on Wet Canvas. It was provided by Bonnie.

I find roses to be difficult (for me) to capture in paint.
As usual, black is a terror to photograph. I spent over an hour and this is the best I came up with. The color is very close to real life in the two closeups- the full painting shows too much peach color...but that came at the price of more reflections. I don't have a scanner- always relied on photographing.

  1. They really are a challenge to paint, but I love them, too. These are beautiful. That forward pink rose feels especially perfect, and I love the way the others nestle into the background. Also like the warm shadowed colors of the two on the far right. lovely.

  2. You are so great when it comes to painting light and shadow like this. I love how you made the paint thick so the petals appear 3 dimensional.

  3. I agree, the pink rose in the foreground is wonderful! I really like that you painted only the flowers and chose not to include a vase in your composition. Black is impossible to photograph (as you can see with the last thing I posted) and we have tried scanning the darker paintings, but you have to be careful because it can pick up too much of the canvas texture.

I think the solution here is that we just need to all get together so we can see the paintings in person!

  5. Dean, I love your brushstrokes. Always have, always will. The way you "sculpted" your foremost pink flower is excellent. If I may be so bold, I think the cropping on the bottom detail makes for a better composition. Happy Painting! -Don

  6. Dean, these roses are just so pretty! I love your work here, the petals, the stems, the background...There is a sense of romance to this one (and I do not have romantic bones, so for me to feel that from the piece says something!)...

  8. Thank, Sheila...I always have to push myself to apply thick paint at the last of the painting.

  11. Hi Don...You are right. That happens to me a lot...very often the close up crops reveal a stronger painting than the original shot. A few times, I have made a new painting from a close up shot.

  13. Great job, Dean - that pink one is perfect. I'm with you, roses are one of the hardest things to paint.
