Feeling Light Headed

Close ups
Happy Halloween!
Acrylic, approx. 9"x8" on Canson cold pressed watercolor paper.

The WDE was on a Halloween theme this week. Dana was the gracious hostess.

I first put the drawing on the paper then applied many wet washes of acrylic, often encouraging runs and blends by spritzing with water. Sometimes a blow dryer was used between washes.

I tried to reach a balance between detail and suggestion.

It was a blast to try some experimentation.

Ontario Autumn

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This painting is in WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the host.
Thanks for all the wonderful photos to choose from this week, Jean!

I wanted to try my hand at a landscape and this one sure filled the bill. What a beautiful spot!

I chose to keep it simple and leave out the falls that was in the reference. My reason...I like the peaceful look of the smooth water and reflections.

I tried to follow some plein air painting hints. Simplify... establish the darks first...put in the large shapes...then add some suggestion of detail. The paint is thickest...the lightest light and the darkest dark...the brightest color...are all at the focal point....(Hopefully).

Bold And Beautiful-Cardinal

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This painting is from a photo I took through a window looking into my backyard.

Cardinals are very musical with their many different calls during the Spring. The bold red color of the males was once referred to as "nature's Valentine" by one of my blogging friends.

This artwork contains two colors that always require special concentration from me...red and green. Getting a value range in red, and still keep it red, is a special challenge.

Wildthing

Close ups

Oil in 7x5 hardboard.

This was done for WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the gracious hostess who supplied the photo.
As if you all didn't know it already, I confess I have a love for woodland creatures of all sorts. They are such survivors. I wish there were some solution to resolve our need for land versus their need for land.

I first coated the board with a very dark red. On each consecutive pass (there were about three passes) I applied thicker paint. By the last pass it was very thick in selected spots such as the white fur above the eyes. I enjoyed this one. Hope you like it.

Pelicans-Revamp

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This painting was originally posted in Feb. of '09.

As I was sorting through some older paintings, I came across this one. Although painted sometime before the event, this just brought to mind the plight of these creatures involved in the Gulf oil spill. I feel the suffering deep in my heart.

I modified and "hushed" some of the "bellowing" blues which were in the first version.
I'm much happier with it now. I hope you all like it!

Wonderment

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 board.

This was painted for WDE at Wet Canvas. The reference photo was supplied by Bonnie.

My aim was for this one to be super loose. Even though it's pretty loose, I didn't quite achieve what I had in mind...not quite loose enough.

Mark 10:14 He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The image below shows the drawing I did on the board. I reinforced major lines with colored ink from red and sienna Pigma Brushes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Below is my prepared board.
I squeezed a small amount of gesso, then a few drops of black gesso. I brushed them around loosely to achieve a grayed marbled effect...approximately mid value. This I dried using a hair dryer.

Next I squeezed a couple of small spots of acrylic yellow ochre. I spritzed it with water and brushed the transparent wash over the board. Next added a touch of acrylic burnt sienna to add variety in a few areas. Once again I dried it with a hair dryer.

I love working on surfaces prepared in this way.
Any spots left showing in the finished painting helps to add harmony and energy. Plus by starting from a mid value, the correct values are easier to achieve. It's an inspiring surface to work upon!

Texas Sunset-Longhorn

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard

I painted this for the WDE at Wet Canvas. The reference photo was supplied by Kay.

Awhile back, I painted a lot of longhorn paintings. I actually ran out of good source material. So, it was fun to finally do another.

This is oil on a 5x7 hardboard. I first toned the surface with a combination of cadmium orange and red oxide acrylic. This set me up to answer Kay's challenge of using some fall colors within the composition. I liked it so well that I kept much of it for the sky.

Thanks for looking!
