Waterfowl-Landscape

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to The Phone Photo Challenge at DPW posted by Elaine Stolt.

Elaine wrote: What makes a good photo doesn't necessarily make a good painting, and vice-versa! Your challenge is to create a painting from this photo I took with my phone. Crop it, change the colors, do what you will, but have fun with it!

This is the photo.
I zoomed in to the far middle background...the small bit of exposed water with ducks/geese around it.
My goal for this piece was to keep it extremely loose and to imply detail. I used my trusty painting knife to advance the foreground.
I have also have begun exploring a technique developed by a very skillful artist, Julie Ford Oliver.
I have merely scratched the surface of this process. She calls it fracturing...Check her out...amazing work!

  1. Well - my jaw dropped! This is so different for you, but it has a beautiful impressionist feeling to is with gorgeous color. Good for you for pushing yourself to try a new way of painting.
I appreciate your kind words about me and my fracturing technique.

  5. I think this is lovely, Dean. Admittedly, I have a hard time seeing the birds, but I still love the piece. Reminds me of some wetlands I see on my way to work. Lately they have been populated by either white herons or egrets (I am not too familiar with all bird species). I'd never seen so many in once place!
