Dolly

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Best Friend Challenge posted by Polly Madel.
Polly said,"I thought that it would be fun to do a challenge of man's best friend and his/her favorite things."

A toy poodle, Dolly was 6.3 pounds of unconditional love. She didn't seem to prefer any particular toy. I believe Dolly considered me her possession. She always seemed to be watching out for me as much as I watched out for her. Little Dolly was nearly 17 years old. She passed in Feb. 2010.
She has left a hole in this house and in my heart, but I realize such is the nature of life.

Well meaning bloggers and friends have said get another dog. Truthfully...At this point in my life, I'm just not physically capable of caring for a dog properly. I just wrap myself in warm memories...I'm satisfied with that.

  1. Wonderful Painting Dean! Such a touching post. Dogs really are much more than just a pet. They do become part of the family. So sorry about her passing but what a long life she had! I am sure you have a lot of great memories with her.

  4. I am so sorry to know you lost your Dolly Dean. She is so pretty and I love how the light changes on her fur. You did such a beautiful job. I also know what you mean about not being physically able to care for a new dog. I don't think I can do it any longer after we lose our Jed (not that I want to think about that). I hurt from top to bottom and stem to stern when Michael goes out of town and I have to take over the duties.

  7. Sherry...I completely sympathize with you. Pets can be almost as demanding as raising children.

  8. Awww... such a sweet doggie pal! I know you must miss her. She looks a little like my Izzy, who is a Bichon. I would miss my dog-pal as well. She is so much company for me . You are right Dean, you still have the memories which don't expire :) Love this painting!

  10. Dolly was adorable, Dean. It's always so sad when they pass. Now you'll have this memory of her on canvas. They live a long time when they are treated well!!
