San Francisco Victorian

Oil on 7x5 gessoed hardboard.
This is my submission for Karin Jurick's DSFDF. Architecture has never been one of my strengths when it comes to subject matter. So this week's challenge dragged me kicking and screaming out of my comfort zone. Thanks, Karin...I needed that.

  1. hi dean, i've been following your blog in my reader and look forward to your submissions each week to KJ painting challenge, i am always surprised at how you easily conform to each subject matter. s much as you say you struggled with this one, i say you knocked it out of the park. really really great painting! you've set an almost ominous mood in this...which i love, really handled all the details very well. great job.

  2. Christine said it all. I'm whining about this challenge and you quietly and quickly submit this seemingly effortless gem. *sigh* I have such a long path ahead of me. Love the sky on this....

  3. Great job Dean! I especially love the sky, nice high contrast in the painting.

  4. Hi, Christine! Thanks for your encouragement! I really did dread doing it...struggled painting it, and fought with photographing it...but in the end I am kinda happy with the effort.
It does look rather spooky, doesn't it?

  5. Hey, Sheila! Thanks for your kind comment. I glad it looks effortless. It was hard work to make it appear that way. Every painting is like waging a small war...and ya can't win 'em all.

  6. Thank you Carolee. As for the sky...I had just started to lay it in...noticed the nice strokes...and said to myself,"leave it like that". Glad I listened for once.

  9. You are quick! I really like this - I'm stilling thinking about this one so haven't started it yet. Maybe this weekend I'll have a chance to tackle it. Now if mine will turn out half as good as yours it will be great ;-)

  13. Great Piece! I love the way you handled the sky, what a contrast to the building!

Somehow the whole thing unites as one whole uniformed design!

  17. Wonderful! At first I thought this was a photograph, but the sky shows a powerful brush work. I like it a lot!!

  19. I know what you mean about the 'kicking and screaming' part. You did a great job-- my first imression was of a wood cut. Did you start with a dark background?

  20. Hi, R Garriot...yes, I first applied black gesso to the support. The wood cut appearance comes from dragging a dry brush of light paint, with a lifting motion at the end, over the dried brush marks of the black gesso.

I really like your rendition of the Victorian!
