Awe Of Autumn-Landscape
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Falls' Challenge which was posted by the wonderful painter, Ann Feldman.
I first toned the canvas a purple to keep in line with Ann's suggestion for this challenge.
This is a typical Oct. cornfield scene in northeast Ohio.

English Sheepdog-Portrait
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel..
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Bonnie, and she provided great reference photos.
I believe this is an Old English Sheepdog.
I tried to use the principles of Yin and Yang in this puppy portrait.
This means opposite factors. Thick paint versus thin...Light vs dark...Warm vs cool. I also like the ability to look down through the development (layers) of the painting. From the thick finishing strokes right on down to beginning...the bare spots of canvas...with all the development in between.
At the moment, I'm happy with how this one turned out.

Pride- Child Portrait
Oil on 7x5 canvas panel..
This is my second contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Valri, and she provided great photos to work from.
I came upon a new find (for me) Peggi Kroll-Roberts. I really like her freeing style of painting...plenty of paint with less detail. Posterized in a way. Check her out.
Anyhow, I decided to try the proud fisherman with this approach. As usual I put in a bit too much detail, but it was fun and may need a few more tries.
Once again, thanks for the great refs, Valri!

When You're Smiling- Portrait
Oil on 7x5 hardboard panel..
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Valri, and she provided great photos to work from.
The lady in this painting is Valri herself.
I figured that if you're brave enough to put her photographic portrait up, I should be brave enough to attempt it.
I was reminded of the song "When You're Smiling" as I painted and the last line: "Keep on smiling
Cause when you're smiling
The whole world smiles with you". This carries a strong subliminal message to "smile".
I believe I must have had a smile for the entire painting...good medicine, bur the face muscles are a bit stiff.

Beyond Value-Liberty
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's The Value Challenge posted by the very fine artist, Liz Wiltzen.
Liz said: "Simplify, simplify, simplify.
This is all about finding the large abstract shapes. If you take color out of the equation, it gets you looking at things in a whole new way.
So here’s the deal, you can use only 4 values. Lots of squinting and comparing will be required - and some decision making about what to make darker or lighter to stay within the 4 value range. The goal is to create an interesting, linked pattern of shapes. Look for opportunities to bring values closer together in order to lose edges and connect shapes. It’s magic when you find them!"
Perhaps because we are still within the shadow of the 10th anniversary of 9-11, I chose to paint the Statue Of Liberty yet again.
This priceless thing called liberty...beyond value...that needs our vigilant protection always.
I managed to maintain only four values as requested (I think).
Thanks for the great challenge, Liz! :)

Radiating Personality-Portrait
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel..
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Lin, and she provided great photos to work from.
The lady in this painting is Lin herself. The reference photo seemed to radiate character and personality. So, I gave myself the challenge to try and capture that in this painting.
It was surprising how much fun this one was! At the moment, I'm happy with it.

9/11-Never Forget
Acrylic on approx. 8x11 gessoed watercolor paper.
This great lady saw it all come down on that dreadful morning of September 11, 2001.
The purest of blue Autumn skies was turned gray with smoke and red with flames.
The terrorists laughed and applauded while America cried.
America changed forever.
Now we are told to leave out the first responders...and to leave out prayer and mentions of God at the 10th year memorial gathering.
You all must do what is in your hearts.
I must do what is in mine...I shall remember....who the heroes were....who the villains are...and who our Holy Savior is.

Pondering Porker-Pig
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's The Paint your Pig Challenge posted by Carol Marine .
This weeks’ challenge was very simple. Paint a pig. Any pig
I found a pig painting I posted on my blog clear back in Oct, 2006. Check it out here.
I was struck by this old '06 painting! I thought, "This is better than what I'm painting today!"
Mixed emotions. On the up side, I was doing work then that I like even more today, with the passage of time. On the down side, I somehow feel like I've been regressing backwards instead of progressing.
At this moment, I feel like going back over my old paintings and injecting some of that approach into my present work....That's what I attempted to do with this new porker.

Concentration-Child Portrait
Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Li, and she provided great photos to work from.
I have been checking out the methods of one of my favorite artists this week. Her name is Carolyn Anderson. Take a look at her great Russian Impressionist style. This beautiful child fit right in with her type of subject matter....so I decided to try it with her technique.
It was educational and I really enjoyed the experience.
