Beyond Value-Liberty

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's The Value Challenge posted by the very fine artist, Liz Wiltzen.
Liz said: "Simplify, simplify, simplify.

This is all about finding the large abstract shapes. If you take color out of the equation, it gets you looking at things in a whole new way.

So here’s the deal, you can use only 4 values. Lots of squinting and comparing will be required - and some decision making about what to make darker or lighter to stay within the 4 value range. The goal is to create an interesting, linked pattern of shapes. Look for opportunities to bring values closer together in order to lose edges and connect shapes. It’s magic when you find them!"

Perhaps because we are still within the shadow of the 10th anniversary of 9-11, I chose to paint the Statue Of Liberty yet again.
This priceless thing called liberty...beyond value...that needs our vigilant protection always.
I managed to maintain only four values as requested (I think).
Thanks for the great challenge, Liz! :)

1 Peter 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:25But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
