Bovine Beauty-Calf

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Skappy generously supplied the reference photos.

I singled one calf from the herd. Always a joy to paint bovine beauty.

I first toned the canvas with a dark red/brown acrylic. After the drawing was on, I painted the background (the area around the calf) with black gesso. After the black was dry, I made it notches darker by painting it with thinned ultr. marine blue oil paint.

After all the background prep, I had fun painting the calf in thick strokes.

  2. Bel animal, jeune il est déjà imposant... je suppose qu'il est issu d'une belle lignée. Vous lui avez donné une belle nuance de couleurs pour sa robe... Bises

  5. The warm russet color of the calf balanced with that subtle blue of the background is magical, Dean.
