Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Skappy generously supplied the reference photos.
I singled one calf from the herd. Always a joy to paint bovine beauty.
I first toned the canvas with a dark red/brown acrylic. After the drawing was on, I painted the background (the area around the calf) with black gesso. After the black was dry, I made it notches darker by painting it with thinned ultr. marine blue oil paint.
After all the background prep, I had fun painting the calf in thick strokes.

Proverbs 3: 11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves,as a father the son he delights in.

You picked the best of the herd and did a fantastic job on it!
ReplyDeleteBel animal, jeune il est déjà imposant... je suppose qu'il est issu d'une belle lignée. Vous lui avez donné une belle nuance de couleurs pour sa robe... Bises
ReplyDeleteWOW! Best Calf EVER!

ReplyDeleteI've said it before...there is just nothing, zip, nada, that you can't paint! lol---love this calf and the strong colors you used.
ReplyDeleteThe warm russet color of the calf balanced with that subtle blue of the background is magical, Dean.
