Invented Color

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
Like many of you, I suppose, I have looked at the work of many, many, talented artists on the internet over the last few years. This has good rewards by showing you what is possible and revealing many things you've never thought of. Techniques and styles galore!

The downside for me was being slowly removed from being myself. I got the feeling that emulation was controlling my painting. So, with that in mind, I dug back and found one of mine that I liked from '06. I painted a loose copy...different crop etc.

The color choices are more intuitive and invented. I don't want to produce a copy of nature or a photograph. I want to produce a piece of art...a painting. At least that's how I feel today. Tomorrow- who knows??

  1. This is wonderful Dean! I love the thick and juicy paint and the eyes are wonderful. The colors are beautiful and interesting enough because of the subtle lavender but not distracting like some paintings can be with a "in your face" fuchsia or "deal with it" vermillion.

  3. You make some great points here Dean. Especially for a guy like me that is really still searching for how I do paint and what my style really is. Although, I think as a whole, no matter how much emulating you do, your own personality still seems to come through. For me, I just recently discovered oils again and I am really enjoying working with it. But what I am searching now is the right substrate to paint on, whether to tone the substrate, underpainting or direct? And searching through these many great blogs help a lot. I am enjoying the journey. Now I just need to find more time to paint.
