Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Christine supplied all the reference photos. Thanks, Christine.
I went for the interesting Hawaiian chap who was weaving palm fronds into bowls! So much character in that face. This one reached what seemed a totally hopeless stage less than halfway into it. I swear the head looked like a lumpy mud ball, Lol! But I kept on painting spots of color...by the time I got to the lighter notes it made more sense. The color is from imagination. Here's the cropped photo I worked from.

I love it!! ... I especially like how you managed the expression of the face.
ReplyDeleteThe expression lines of the face, especially on the forehead, and the texture and color of skin.
Congratulations.
I leave you a hug!
Thank you, Mayra...You are so kind! I tried to get back to your site, but I saw you're on one of those Google thingies. I can't get in.
DeleteDean, this is FANTASTIC!!! Especially considering it went through the mudball stage. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kathyrn. Yep...big ol' mudball... Kinda looked like Swampthing without the hanging moss....Lol!
DeleteReally good one, Dean. You captured such a strong likeness and your colors have a punch. Imagination works!

DeleteYes, I loved the sunlight that was evident in the photo!
excellent! thanks for letting us know it was a struggle and had an ugly stage. Hard to believe! I am impressed with how you got the sunshine on his face---much better than the photo.
ReplyDeleteYep, it was very definitely an ugly stage. It was enough to make me want to just wipe it off....glad I didn't.
DeleteThe sunshine was in part due to recalling other sunny faces I had painted.
Got a strong Jerry Garcia vibe from this one. You did this beautifully Dean.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sherry!
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely a strong J. Garcia vibe!
Love it Dean. I like how you are able to capture the likeness without (it appears) laboring over it. Beautifully done!
