Apple Patch-Green Apple

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Pare Down your Apple Challenge at DPW posted by Carol Marine .
Carol said: What is the smallest amount of information that still says "apple"? Your challenge is to paint an apple - any apple - in as few areas of color as possible, and still have it read as a 3-dimensional apple.

I called this painting "Apple Patch". It may be more accurately called 'color patches'. It was educational to record the color and value shifts as the form rounded away from the light source.

  3. Love that gorgeous deep red background, Dean. You almost make me crave an apple (I'm so not much of a fruit eater!). I saw "Freewheeling Floral" in the thumbnail and my heart skipped a beat at its gorgeousness. Then I realized I own that painting! Oh happy day!! (It is on my fireplace mantle downstairs!)

  4. Your apples look great Dean, great selection of greens and the background really compliments the subject.
I had to have a second go at mine as it was not "Pared" enough but one keeps learning and observing.

  9. Good Morning Dean!... Touchdown... on this one!

You have indeed given "Granny" life with your carefully selected brushstrokes... but kept the freshness and loose quality which captures the eye and holds it!

    Nicely done!

    Good Painting!
    Warmest regards,
    Bruce

Hi, Martine...There's a lot of truth in that "apple a day" phrase.
