Pondering Porker-Pig

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's The Paint your Pig Challenge posted by Carol Marine .
This weeks’ challenge was very simple. Paint a pig. Any pig

I found a pig painting I posted on my blog clear back in Oct, 2006. Check it out here.
I was struck by this old '06 painting! I thought, "This is better than what I'm painting today!"
Mixed emotions. On the up side, I was doing work then that I like even more today, with the passage of time. On the down side, I somehow feel like I've been regressing backwards instead of progressing.
At this moment, I feel like going back over my old paintings and injecting some of that approach into my present work....That's what I attempted to do with this new porker.

  1. well....it is not true. I have been following your blog forever...and though I know you were a good painter a long time ago, there is no way you were a better painter in 2006. I know what you mean, however, because I too have seen some prior work that seems better than some of my current work. After further reflection, however, I know the body of work from several years ago was much more hit and miss than today. I think it could be compared to a singer who sang a good song in 2006. That one song doesn't mean everything. It is only one song of many. Your pigs are both good pigs. I prefer the new one!

  2. I have to say, Dean that I think your present day work is phenomenal. After all, I've purchase three of your pieces in the past year. And this pig is perfection. Pondering indeed!

  3. I agree with Celeste, your work is wonderful and consistent and I am always impressed how you seem to be able to paint any subject and do it soooo well. I love this pig, I recently purchased a big resin pig that looks almost exactly like this piggy. He is sitting under my coffee table, pigs make me smile.

  4. First, I want it to be known that I am not merely fishing for compliments.
But this has been a recurrent question that's been popping up in my foggy artist's brain (heh)over quite a long while.

Celeste, Sherry, and Barbara...Thank you for your honest responses. I appreciate you more than I can say.

  6. I have been following your work for some time now and I have observed one thing that is consistent.. I feel that you are constantly trying out new approaches with varied subjects, the intention to evolve is obvious. With such an intent,I think the growth happens no matter what you feel. There is no chance for you to degress :-)
