Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
Looks as if these two gulls are trying out for American Idol. Hope they win! They're sure putting their hearts in it.
Just felt the need to cut loose with color/bravado.
Below is the prepared canvas panel. I love working on this type of surface. First, I haphazardly applied drops of white and black gesso. I brushed it enough to give it a marbled effect. Then dried it with a blow dryer. Second, using acrylic paint, I put a few small dabs of yel. ochre at the top...cad. red lt. toward the middle...and alizeron crimson at the bottom. These were loosely brushed around. This creates an exciting surface that looks ready to stand alone as a piece of art. Painting with oils on top of this is a true
pleasure.

Your title made me laugh out loud, I think you described these 2 gulls perfectly. Wonderful painting with lots of energy. Thanks so much for posting your prepared panel, it is most helpful to see what's underneath all that "singing".
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing how you prepared your panel. I love the color!
ReplyDeleteLike Angela, I laughed out loud upon seeing the title. Thanks for that. :-) I think I have a new Deano favorite. This is so cool on so many levels - starting with that excellent undercoat, all the way through the wonderful attitude you have captured in these two aspiring stars. Great job!

Perfect title for these two! You've painted them with such animation that I can hear those shrieking chirps from hear. Love that king of energy! It is so helpful seeing your undercoat. It really adds life in a cool way!
ReplyDeleteQuelle lamentation! Sont-ils affamés ou se crient-ils leur amour?
ReplyDeleteToute votre toile vit et vibre grâce à ces deux goelands. Merci de nous révéler votre préparation à recevoir ce duo grandiloquent...
Ils ont la force pour gagner!
Love your creativity with titles and paintings. Thank you so much for sharing your technique on painting such vibrant backgrounds! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic, Dean. I love the texture the colors you created. Very well done!
ReplyDeleteLovely gulls, Dean! They make themselves heard for sure! (I once did a painting with a shouting gull which I called 'The Seagull feels Neglected') The colors and the methods using both media are very good. Was the first black and white under-painting just your planning guide?
ReplyDeleteFunny description. Well painted and yes they are from your side so they will definitely win! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely gorgeous painting, Dean. That background just pops these gulls! It LOOKS like it was fun to paint!
ReplyDeleteThey probably sound better than some who audition of American Idol. LOL!! Great rendition.
ReplyDeleteAngela...So glad you liked it Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi, Carol...I really like working on panels prepared this way! Seems to give the painting a head start.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Don! I think these two have a good chance to win....There are several gullible judges. :)
ReplyDeleteGwen...This was a very enjoyable one to paint!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martine!
ReplyDeleteHi, Sheila! The toned canvas will pump you up at the very start of a painting! Fun!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Edward, my friend! I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice words, Marie!
ReplyDeleteYou asked:"Was the first black and white under-painting just your planning guide?"
No. The white and black gesso were loosely brushed around to simulate marble. This will show through the water thinned acrylic applied next.
Megha...Thanks! They really sound better when they stop to gobble up some breakfast!
ReplyDeleteHi, Autumn/Sherry! It was a blast to paint! Glad it shows.
ReplyDeleteGreat contrast and thanks for sharing the panel prep.
ReplyDeleteHi, Lokelani! Their harmony is great!! :)
ReplyDeleteYou made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteVery nice piece great colors.
squwak-y! very well done!
ReplyDeleteNice, Dean...bet Simon would approve. Very interesting is the panel you begin with...great effect. I suppose one of them is Elton Johnathan Livingston Sea Gull.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam, My pleasure!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Irit and Celeste! I appreciate you both!
ReplyDeleteThanks, James! Hee hee..love your reference to Mr.E.J.L.S.G. :)
ReplyDeleteVery sloppy spelling Mr. Dean. It's Alizerin, not alizeron. Spelling out the full names of the cadmiums is not inappropriate either. Your hero Schmid always did that. Excellent handling of color, however.
