Ups And Downs In Frisco

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This was done for Karin Jurick's DSFDF. The photo is a real doozy of a challenge with an overload of detail to deal with and edit.

I wound up handling it as a purely abstract work. Blocks of value to create a pattern, using interesting color along the way. The colors are not an imitation of the ones in the photo...after all, it is a painting.
Hope you like it.

  2. It's hard to paint a street with "love" but somehow you seem to have done it Dean!

  3. I do like it. Simplifying or abstracting as you said) objects, whether complicated like this or simpler, make painting simpler. You did it! Our daughter is moving to san fran this weekend, I hope to paint out there sometime!

  4. It is a beautiful shot and also "wunderschön" painted. It is a kind of impressive work of warm light that Monet would have loved ;-)

  6. Good job on this challenge, Dean. I like the way you emphasized the warm against those cools and the simplification of the scene.

  7. "Overload of detail" is a fitting description of this dsfdf photo, so much to see and determine what to leave in and leave out. You've taken a very busy scene and painted a soothing and calm scene. Well done.

  9. Wow, Dean, one of the best entries in spite of it being a "doozy" of a challenge. Your abstract approach and choice of colors speak volumes for the final painting.

  13. What a great painting. I do admire your talent to simplify yet the viewer doesn't seem to notice anything missing.

  14. Dean, Your linear perspective is fab...but your painterly approach just makes this piece!!

  15. You handled this challenge really well Dean, I would think it could confusing. I should give it a go, haven't done one of her challenges in a while. Always amazed at how small you work most of the time.

  19. This is fantastic Dean. I appreciate how you describe your process when you talk about your paintings. I think looking at something like this, so overwhelming with detail, as an abstraction would be really helpful for me too. I didn't get this one in on time, but I think I'll take on the challenge anyway and see where it gets me.
