The Survivor

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardwood.
This is a San Salvador rock iguana. I see something strangely noble in their appearance...similar to an eagle. They have survived so many countless years only to have their existence threatened...by you know who.
The image for this painting was graciously supplied by Lisilk for the WDE at Wet Canvas...Thank you, Li!

  1. You knocked this one right out of the park. The color... the light... OMG, I love it! You've taken a subject I ordinarily wouldn't like, and made it beautiful and noble. The richness of color and texture on the underside of the chin alone is so very pleasing.

  4. I love the expression in his eyes, Dean, and, it's such a shame that "we" have to be the cause of so many animals going extinct!

  7. This is great, Dean. I like the 'dawn of creation' feel of the background, and you've definitely invested him with power and majesty. Which is what I love about your portrayal of all God's creatures. : - )

  23. Thank you, Liz. I couldn't quite come up with the words 'dawn of creation' but that's exactly what I wanted to come across...glad it did.
All God's critters have that 'spark of beauty within' that I attempt to reveal...same as human portraits.

You are right, with your free spirited brush strokes, and regal colors, an iguana is a noble creature.

  34. Dean - love your iguana! I have a friend who has one in a big glass cage in her family room. His name is Fluffy. I'll have to direct her to your blog!

  35. What a character! Beautiful job with this, I like the brushwork in the upper right corner that points me to his face and I like that you lost the edges on his body as it goes off the canvas, both help put the focus on the focal point which is his face. Stunning!

  36. This is a really fun piece. I like the way you blow-up a small portion to show the brushwork. I plan on visiting your blog often.

You deserve all the awards, Dean. Thanks for setting such a good example - as both a painter - and a human being.
