Eider Pair

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
The image for this painting was supplied by Alain for the WDE at Wet Canvas.
I elected to paint this great looking pair of eider ducks. I was familiar with them through paintings and photos for years...was always fascinated by the beautiful plumage. It was a treat to finally paint 'em.
I first toned the support with red acrylic...it gives me a medium value to work from, plus I like to leave it peeking through the finished product for excitement and harmony.

  1. The eagle was quite impressive - but I have to admit I love these ducks even more.

  2. Beautiful! I was born in Northern Germany, lived near a river called "Eider" and we often went there to feed Eider ducks! So, I like it ;-)

  4. Hi Mi! I've never had a chance to see one of these beautiful ducks in person.
A lady at the Wet Canvas asked me what do they sound like...loud and different?
I answered I have no idea. They are pretty silent in my painting. :)

  5. I love these two! That red ground really does set up a nice reverberation with the blue of the water. I particularly like the way you captured that sweet expression on the brown duck with just a few strokes. Fantastic!

  8. Thanks, Liz...I'm glad you like the red ground effect.
It's always a goal of mine to use as few strokes as possible...but it doesn't always happen.

  11. Oh Deano....
I would sing you a serenade for this beauty. I love how you capture the male looking at the female in a either loving or protective manner.

  13. Dean, I have to say Dean that I love the WAY you painted this pair. And I really love that red peeking through...it gives a depth even in the lighter areas...NICE!
