I'm pretty pleased with this one. The rabbit is colorful and painterly...but what really 'cranked my tractor' is the canvas surrounding the bunny! Seems I would struggle with what to use as a background...and usually wind up with nearly the same ol' thing. I truly like the dark abstract foliage of this one!!

I love to paint backlight on a subject. On this one, I pushed the color and allowed the paint to 'play' as it came off the tip of my brush. Hope ya like it!

Cricket-Insect Art

I never considered doing insect subjects until I started turning out small 5x7 paintings. But subject size and canvas size seem to fit so well together.

This painting was actually posted here some time ago. I liked it too well to let it languish in a corner of the studio, so I made a few minor adjustments and reposted.

Two Roses

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
I actually spent three short sessions on these flowers. I had some trouble getting the right red blended. These roses are neither red nor pink...they are more of a beautiful peach color. I had to go through many combos of every red in my possession to finally come close.
After all that struggle, my camera didn't want to reproduce the red in the painting! After a great hassle, this is as close as I could get.

Swan Against Red

Oil on5x7 archival canvas panel.

For some reason, I really enjoy painting swans. The canvas panel was first primed with black and white gesso which creates a marbled gray. Then, I toned it lightly with acrylic alizarin crimson and a touch of cad red light. This is what I use for most of my work.
Next, the oils were applied rather thickly...one stroke...reload. This allows for a textured , painterly appearance, which is what I admire when viewing anyone's artwork.
I could have continued painting, filling in the entire canvas with water, sky, or whatever. But my eye liked how the swan sat against the red acrylic background. So I said, "that's it" and signed it.

Desert Landscape

There was a time when I would painstakingly reproduce every detail & color in a photograph. I thought the artistic goal was to reproduce the photo image. I must say I got pretty adept at it too.

Then a light came on: merely use the photo to create a painting! Ah, what a glorious freedom!

Rabbit

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. Here's a wild cotton tail bunny brightly backlit against a dark red background. On this one, I went for thickly applied paint in order to achieve directional and fresh painterly strokes. No over-blending here. I first toned the canvas with red acrylic...much remains visible in the finished work.
