Mountain Bluebird

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Color of Blue Challenge at DPW presented by  the super talented Qiang Huang. He instructed; Do a painting with a blue object as the center of focus. High key (light value dominant) is preferred. Please try not to use red and oranges to contrast, but still make the blue color look clean, and pop.

This was an interesting challenge...Thank you Qiaing!
Never realized how much ya really miss the complements until ya can't use them. Something like missing the water when the well runs dry.
Hope I didn't bend the rules by that background looking sorta orange-y .  It's made up of yellow ochre plus a touch of purple to gray it. It's a camera thing.

  1. Hi Dean. When I first saw it, I couldn't understand why there were no complements. Now I know. :) That IS a difficult challenge, and I think you have answered it wonderfully!

    1. Thank you, Kathryn. Glad you think that I succeeded. I would love to have done this on a canvas that was toned red! :)

    1. Thank you, Steinunn! I was concerned the ochre background looked a bit orange...which was a no no according to the rules.

    1. This is actually a Mountain Bluebird indigenous to the West Coast.
The Eastern Bluebird has a rust colored breast.
