A Tribute-Mare

 Close ups

Acrylic on 12x9 gessoed art board.

Remember the cutting horse painting I posted 6 days ago on Nov. 8th? Well, This painting is for that same lady. It's a tribute painting for her friend who, sadly, just lost this 4 year old mare.

I used basically the same mixed media technique as I did on her Nov. 8th piece. The only difference being that I first applied gesso and let it dry showing the brushstrokes. They wind up showing nicely in the finished painting. I also toned the board with a red acrylic which helps to harmonize/unify the painting. And, yep, I also used a black Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.

Hope you like it...let me know what you or con.

  1. Hi Dean. As a horse owner and lover, I think you have done a beautiful job of this handsome and feisty-looking mare. Love the colors! And I am sorry to hear she is no longer with us.

  2. Wonderful painting! I love the colors and the way you captured the mare's expression and the sheen of her coat.

  3. this painting is beautiful, Dean! I love the closeup showing the wonderful texture!!

  4. It's perfect! I am sure the new owner will be totally thrilled.

  5. It makes me so sad to know this beautiful girl is gone and at so young an age. You've painted her beautifully, Dean, and I love the golden background.

  6. Beautifully done as usual Dean. one can feel the strength and proudness from the horse. It is interesting how you are playing with mixed media, works well.
Wishing you a wonderful day Dean.

  7. You've done a wonderful rendering of this mare. Love the highlights on her body and the way you treated the background. Bravo!!

  8. Great job on the sheen of her coat and the movement. You just continually amaze. Is there anything you cannot do?
