"Vice" Grip-Vise Grips

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The You Know the Drill Challenge at DPW posted by Eileen McCoy.
Eileen said: You've got them in your studio/workshop: drills, hammers, pliers, screw drivers. Compose your own dynamic composition.

Vise grips getting a grip on vice.......
To me, a nice glass of Merlot is a great vice.
In order to prevent a drinking problem, i.e. dropping the drink, a pair of vise grips could be employed to get a secure grip on your vice. The danger is, this could crush the glass and cause a worse problem than ever.

John 2:9 the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

Rest On The Rocks-Pelican

Close up

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Bonnie was the great hostess. Thanks for the terrific reference photos.
I really like working from photos. But never copy slavishly. Turn the photo into a painting!
Here's the original photo to illustrate the changes I made in cropping and color.

Pelicans are fascinating critters. There is a prehistoric manner about them.

First I answered Bonnie's challenge to crop. Then I challenged myself to push the chroma and texture in this one. I also changed the lighting in order to dramatize the color. As of now, I'm pretty satisfied with the results.

Gone Fishin'-Salmon Fillet

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Raw Meat Challenge at DPW posted by Sarah Sedwick.

Sarah said: Raw meat has been a popular painting subject throughout art history - keep it raw, and bring out the inner caveman - or cave painter - in all of us.

I don't always choose wisely, folks...Instead of a simple steak or pork chop...I did this salmon fillet with it's swirly muscle structure interlaced with fat. Great to eat...Hard to paint!

I tried to not be intimidated by the confusing structure and merely paint what I saw. In other words, treat it like a vase of flowers or a landscape. It really helped!
It was a strange challenge, but that's what it's all about. Learning!

Classy-Afghan Hound.

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Joel was the great host. Thanks for the terrific reference photos.

I chose to paint this stately dog because the coat is fascinating with all that flowing fur. I had fun laying in the impasto strokes selectively. The impasto was done with a loaded brush....Yes the brush was loaded, not me! No palette knife was used...and no doggies were harmed in the making of this painting...

Originally, I believed this was a Russian Wolfhound, and said so in my title. I corrected the title when Kathryn Ragan of Studio At The Farm came to my rescue and pointed out that it's actually an Afghan Hound. Thank you Kathryn! Get over to her fine blog and check out the great demo she did on a super painting of geese!

Thanks for looking!

Health Food-Still Life

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Paint it Before You Eat it Challenge at DPW posted by Carol Marine. Carol challenged us to paint colorful Valentine treats.

Yeah...yeah...I know my title for this piece is "Health Food"...which normally means something like celery or an apple. But this is mental health food! Happy, happy...yum, yums!

I painted this over a coat of black gesso! One of my favorite tactics...A fun way to paint!

In The Wind-Horses

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Mo was the great hostess. Thanks for the terrific reference photos.

I liked the look/possibilities of the horses in a reference photo.
Once again, I used the palette knife for this. More and more I find the palette knife to be very freeing from the compulsion for detail. The knife is a terrific tool to inject creative expressiveness into a painting. Confession...I did use a brush for eyes, and nostrils. It was great fun.

Swimming Cygnets-Swans

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The White On White Challenge at DPW posted by Ann Feldman.
Ann's Challenge: "For this week's challenge, let's try to paint white subjects on white backgrounds to see if we can find color and value in all that white!"

These three little cygnets with mom close beside was quite a challenge! I had already decided to do the next challenge via the palette knife.
So for me, this was a challenge on top of a challenge.
I hope future viewers can fathom what this painting represents without me following it around to explain it.

Vietnam Market-Figurative

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Connie was the great hostess. Thanks for the wonderful reference photos.

For something a little different, I decided to try my hand at this market in Vietnam.
I aimed to use saturated color in this one. I used both a brush and palette knife. I wanted to use enough colors and ambiguous shapes to show the clamor and excitement of a market.
Thanks for looking!
