Madison Ave, NYC

Close ups.

Oil on 7x5 gessoed hardboard.
This is in answer to Karin's latest challenge for the DSFDF.
Quite a different challenge! I have always admired other painters' cityscapes but felt strangely compelled to admire them from a distance. Well thanks to Karin, I feel inaugurated.
I think it helped to pre mix most of the colors so as to encourage me not to be stingy with the paint.

  1. Beautiful, Dean! There's something about those bright yellow taxis that are fascinating to look at. Too bad the drivers weren't better at driving them:)

  6. Thanks, Nancy! Bright taxis rushing this way and that...part of the excitement of NYC...but if I were a passenger, it would be about 10 times more excitement than I need! :)

  12. Dean, this is a great rendidtion. The complements work so well together. And you really got the simplification of the buildings further down the street.

  13. there is nothing quite like a good taxicab/city painting..I love that artists know that this type of scene has as much beauty as a Hawaiian seashore! You nailed it.

  14. Dean, you really punched this up by changing the time of day and giving the piece your trademark warmth. Great painting.

  16. Love the addition of the vibrant colors...it realy brings a lot more action and activity to the cityscape. You should continue with more city scenes, your buildings are so expressive!

  17. Dean I love your bright use of color and your advice about mixing up a big batch of paint before starting. I am a beginner and my one of my problems is that I don't use enough paint.

  21. Very, very nice Dean! Your color is standout...the purple street, and yellow sky as compliments give the painting a lot of energy, just like New York!

  22. Love the colors! I know what you mean about cityscapes....daunting, but you, Dean, can paint anything and fill it with life and beauty. I'm convinced.

  38. Again, I have to agree with the others. I love the warmth and glow of the yellows/orange against the purple. Nice proportions too.

  39. I really like the whole thing, but the area that makes me melt is the upper right with the yellow sky and the indication of buildings. There's something very pleasing about the loose paint application, the dark outline around the flatly painted building, and the way the colors vibrate against each other.

  40. Nicely done I always love a yellow sky, love the energy you got on your piece :)
