Reflecting On Good Times-Watermelon

This is my contribution to the DPW Challenge.
This week's challenge was posted by Carol Marine. Carol wrote: "Often when we are trying to render a subject, we SEE one thing but our BRAIN tells us something different. And too often we trust our brains when we shouldn’t, and our art ends up looking awkward. There are several “tricks” for getting past what our brain is telling us. Chief among these is SQUINTING! But another way to practice is painting upside down.
So, this week, I challenge you to paint this still life, upside down, from start to finish! I tried to pick a subject that would be compelling enough, simple in parts, but also fairly complicated."

I have used this great method in a limited way in the past. So this challenge was challenging indeed and very instructive.

I also invested a little more time to achieve a more developed painting.

The Bandito-Raccoon

Acrylic on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my submission for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Valri supplied the photo.

I decided to play and experiment with the raccoon. SPCA statement: no raccoons were injured during this painting .

The acrylic was applied in many transparent washes. I used a few strips of masking tape which were painted over in different number of layers. Once removed, there are a few areas that expose the very start of the painting. It has the effect of peeling back various layers. I used it as a compositional devise and also as an interest generator.
As happens most times in nature, the raccoon blends into it's environment. The viewer is often startled when the animal "suddenly" appears within their focus. This is the effect I was after.

Golden Open Acrylics on hardboard.

Had to try the frog. It was a good way to investigate green variations-something I could normally do only with foliage. Good practice.
The image for this painting was supplied by Miss Mouse (cute name) for this week's WDE.

Still trying to get a handle on the open acrylics. Can't get the thick brushwork I would like-as I do in oils. I unintentionally tended to revert back to how I worked with normal acrylics-too thinly and too tightly. But I did finally manage to get a somewhat painterly appearance.

Pop Art Portrait

Here's something I did just for the fun of it. This was one of the reference photos for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Her name is Valri and she was the hostess of WDE this week.

This is done in the style of Patrick Nagel. He Gained fame in his pop art/poster style by illustrating glamorous ladies for Playboy Mag.
This is acrylic on 6x5 Bristol Vellum paper.
