Monet's Cockerel
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is my submission to the WDE at Wet Canvas. The image was graciously supplied by Kat. This rooster/cockerel is a resident at Monet's garden in Giverny, France.
Trying something New! I did something different (for me) on this one. Instead of going for the largest brush I could handle, I went with two of my small brushes...plus the palette knife in choice areas. Even though I used small brushes, I resisted the urge to control every stroke which leads to over detailing. I tried to keep the strokes loose and gestural. I like the effect.
Do you think it's too "busy"?

Absolutely a beautiful painting, Dean.
ReplyDeleteThis is just phenomenal, Dean. Where do you have this for sale? I checked both your eBay and Etsy links and did not find it there.
ReplyDeletelove your cockerel.
ReplyDeleteI certainly don't think it's too busy Dean! Lovely thick paint and glowing colours! He's terrific.
ReplyDeleteI love the look. The lack of detail at the edges and the pallet knife on the bird really make it stand out. No I don't think it's too busy.
ReplyDeletethe detail and the colours make this painting, great work. ben
ReplyDeleteI love the detail and the texture in this rooster. Not too busy at all. You have inspired me to paint a rooster. :)
ReplyDeleteI love roosters and chickens - this is great. The texture is awesome!
ReplyDeleteNo it is not too busy. What I really love is that it is so warm in colour, Dean! And the rooster id not stiff, but fluffy and feathery!
ReplyDeleteGreat rooster! I really like that he's not standing up...so different. Great colors and lovely brushwork....plus he's a resident at Monet's house...how cool is that!
ReplyDeleteThis is magnificent Dean! I love the way you handled the mane/ collar of the bird. Well done, my friend.
ReplyDeleteNo! Not too much...just right! I would never have guessed you used small brushes on this loose piece. Love the texture of the feathers and the background lends a feel of grass or hay or one of those barnyard beddings.
ReplyDeleteyou know what you are doing! great painting
ReplyDeleteWell, being a photorealist myself, I obviously love "busy." But I do like this, and it has a very salable quality. You'll do well with it!
ReplyDeleteThese roosters are all great Dean, I love the palette knive and smaller brush marks, there is a great quality to the paint. Good Job!
