The Memory Makers

Close ups.

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
I first toned the board with a laid back red. Some of it peeks through the finished painting. I feel this harmonizes the painting.

I started this painting last night-had to stop-finished it today. I feel that this pause lets the image soak into my head. When I finished it up today it flowed with added improvements. Alla prima is wonderful, but sometimes the pause does wonders.

  1. the actual color is "laid back red". Sorry for sounding so ignorant. love the results so I want to make sure.

  2. Hi, Sheila! The laid back red is not an actual color name.( However, that would be a great name!) I created it by mixing black and white gesso which turned out a marbled gray. I then colored that with thinned acrylic alizarin crimson with a touch of cad. red lt. It equals a mid value grayed red.
    Sorry for the confusion. :)

  4. I love the red peaking through. It warms up your painting. I know what you mean about sometimes waiting overnight. It helps to step back, think and look.

  5. Even with the pause, you are much quicker than I! It takes me much longer than 2 days to finish a painting. Yours is wonderful!!

  6. Hi Deano, thanks for visiting my blog and your kind comments. I am now very tempted to copy your method of altering colours with grey! How clever. I love the immediacy of this plein aire work and greatly admire the economy of brushwork used in the figures.

  7. This just totally draws me in, Dean. I find I want to be walking in the sand with the girls...toes into the surf...

  8. Hi, Pam...Thanks. I only recently have been pausing overnight before finishing my painting. I may not use it all the time, but I like that approach. :)

  9. Deb...You include a lot more detail than I do. Your paintings are great.
I used to take 2 weeks to a month in my more detailed acrylics.

  10. Thank you, Marie, for your very kind words. I enjoy attempting to imply a figure in a few strokes of the brush. Thanks for mentioning it!
