Red Rose

Close ups.

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
The rose has often been my nemesis. At first sight, so simple and predictable looking. It involves many challenges, not the least of which is the color red. Since red is basically a medium value color it's hard to achieve highlights in red. Cadmium red light has definite orange influence...and it's not very bright as a highlight. You can't add white because you simply produce pink.
So, to make this appear to have highlights, I played it against a super dark background.

  1. I think you did a great job on it. I particularly like that leaf in the front, great light. You can now officially move on to another challenge as you have mastered this one!

  6. A lovely rendering:the challenge was to portray something soft and ephemeral in thick paint and you have succeeded. I am glad that I got in this morning, Deano. Sometimes the traffic is very dense on your blog and my comments cannot get through.

  7. I know that I am not an artist of any caliber or quality, Dean, but I have done a few roses. I've always left the highlights by deepening the reds in the shadows...Of course, I probably just stated the obvious. LOL Anyway, your work is always so beautiful and you continue the trend with this beautiful rose. For some reason, I am reminded of the fairy tale in which the woman gets pricked by the thorn of a rose and a single drop of blood...(I've forgotten which it is...) Anyway, this is truly stunning!

  8. I don't know if there is anything you can't paint really well. The rose is beautiful. I struggle so much with flowers and have yet to successfully paint a rose. Very nice!

  9. Beautiful range of reds, Dean. Roses are so structurally complex, too. This is gorgeous.

  10. oh I know what you mean about the rose being a challenge to paint... You, however, were patient and got all the shapes and values right..creating a very lovely portrait of a red rose. Congratulations!
