Spirit...Commission Completed

Spirit is done! She received the final ok from my two super friends from Santa Barbara, Ca. and will soon be winging her way west.
Once again, this post looks much like yesterday's image of Spirit. But plenty of improvements have happened. Color adjustments have been made in the fur, background foliage, and the closest ice-plant in the foreground. There are areas on the fur and the closest ice-plant which have been treated to thick textured paint...like the icing on a cake.
And last, but not least, the gleam has been added to the eyes of this beautiful dog.

Tomorrow I will post a painting of Tatiana...It is a tribute to the tiger from the San Fransisco Zoo.

  1. just found your blog and what a stunning pet portrait. i've seen a lot of pet portraits (everyone in my town does them), even done quite a few myself, and a pet portrait is a pet portrait, but this is a truly stunning painting. you truly captured the spirit of this dog. the new owners i'm sure will be proudly showing everyone this painting. great job.

  4. you're welcome! and thank you as well. what i like about your paintings are the colors, there is an intensity in the way they play off each other in your paintings of animals. the landscape in this painting especially. you seem to take more risk with color in these paintings versus your landscapes. just an observation, not a criticism :)

  5. Christine...a thoughtful critique or observation which is put forth in a helpful spirit is like gold on a blog. I am so involved with my own work, it is oftentimes impossible to see with a fresh unbiased eye. I do like the play of color in most of my animal paintings...and I'm usually uncomfortable with the outcome of my landscapes. This is more than likely the result of playing it too safely and restricted with the use of color in my landscapes. So, thank you for being my "extra eyes" and pointing that out. Yours was a "nugget" of a comment. ;)
