Serengeti Sundown-Elephants

I knew something was badly wrong about the colors in my image, but try as I may, I couldn't come close to solving the problem. Well, low and behold, today I solved it...so simple. I take all the photos of my art inside with a light setup that works for me. The camera had gotten on daylight setting instead of incandescent. It's been incorrectly set that way for at least a couple of weeks! No wonder I wasn't satisfied with my color adjustments. Anyhow, Here's a much truer image. ( Sorry about the confusion).

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Joel was the host and provided a bunch of great photos!

I combined two photos for this painting. A beautiful sundown and two elephants. Something about painting elephants touches a sad spot in my heart, knowing their plight just to survive a bit longer on this planet.

This is oil on a 5x7 canvas board. Part painting knife and part loaded brush. Plenty of paint for texture. I had to re-invent some of the lighting....never an easy thing to do.
Hope ya'all like it!

  1. Beautiful and strong. This is a wonderful painting.
When I was in India I had a chance to ride on the back of one. Such a huge animal and very special. I could cry when I think of the cruelty done by poachers for the ivory.

  2. Dean, I was wrapping presents yesterday and of course, I had 3 of your paintings to wrap. I also have 3 of your paintings up on my living room wall. That makes you the #2 spot on my most paintings by a single artist category. I was struck anew at the beauty of your work when I was wrapping yesterday. Almost hard to let them go. But since they are for my precious daughters, I wrapped them cheerfully. Anyway, the elephants too are beautiful. I hope they are not endangered. I do not know too much about the elephant personality but they sure seem to smile and are, to my mind, gentle giants.

  4. Hi Dean - still looks great and on my monitor the difference is hardly noticeable. Love that you took the time to try to get it right. Sign of a professional.
