Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
The photo for this painting was supplied by Cyd for the WDE at Wet Canvas this week.
I'm generally happy with the light in this painting...and I especially like how the horse's head turned out. Hope you enjoy the painting.

  2. Your horse's head did turn out nice! I also like the way you played the color in the background to lead the eye to the focal point of the horse's face.

  3. Me too! I enjoy the perfect proportions of the horses head, the delight of the young rider, the light on the horses neck and the detail of the bridal and reins! Is this 5x7? Even more amazing if it is. As always, I love the choice of colors.

  5. Deb...you said, "the way you played the color in the background to lead the eye to the focal point of the horse's face."
Thanks for pointing that out. That's one of the things I sometimes do with my brush on auto pilot. So I went back and checked it out.

  6. Sheila...Yes it's a 5x7. I just changed the post to reflect that. I really was all over the place with the girl's face...Lol. The face is 3/4" high so it was tough to get the right shapes in there.

  7. I don't know how you managed to capture that subtle move of turning a horse, but I can feel it. And I love the sweet look on her face. The scripture is the best part for me! Nice touch! See you in heaven! Please make sure to introduce yourself to me up there. :)

  10. Fantastic, Dean. I agree the horse's head is superb. I also like the mane and the girl's hair, and the low-key warm colors overall.

  12. Simply gorgeous! Beautiful head and I love the muscle in the neck that gives it so much movement. I also like your choice to use a limited palette. It really works! The girls beautiful blond hair matches the Palomino's as well...your 2 Blonds. Very nice subtle shading on her face! Just enough to give her expression and anyone who rides can appreciate that lift of the reins just before take off.
