Daffodils

Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
Flowers are harder than I first imagine them to be. But I'm used to that by now. Gotta remember to break out of the mindset of "I'm painting a flower"...just paint color patches, negative shapes, values...and hopefully a flower will emerge! Speaking of that, they're beginning to emerge in my yard from the cool ground of Spring! Ah..my favorite season...

The image for this painting was graciously supplied by Elaine for the WDE on Wet Canvas! That site is a super place for artists of all skill levels to congregate, learn share, and have a great time!

  1. Oh so pretty... You did a terrific job. Another thing I don't paint because I'm not there yet in terms of where I want to be.

Thanks for your advice Dean. I'll let everyone know how this turns out. HuGS!

  7. These daffodils are really well done Dean. I like the hard and soft edges a lot. That bit of yellow reflected light on the right hand flower makes it for me.

  8. ah , yes..the daffodil. Nicely done in the simple motif and gentility of the strokes and subtle dimension.
You did well, they are more complex than you first assume.

  21. Dean, such a delicate, soft palette and love the way you painted the daffodils which I think are a hard flower to paint.

  26. I think you did a wonderful job on this. It is so true about the mindset. Just need to remember that it is just pieces of paint, negative shapes, values before it ever becomes a flower. Thanks : )
