Bears Salmon Fishing

Oil on 11x14 archival canvas panel. This is something like my fourth painting of bears catching salmon. I really enjoy doing these. There is nothing more rewarding for me than to portray God's beautiful creatures doing what they do in God's gorgeous country. My fear is that all this may one day disappear due to unthinking (or uncaring) mankind.

Contemporary Cat

Oil 0n 7x5 archival canvas panel.

I first toned the support with a mixture of warm acrylic colors. I then used oils to present the cat. Some colorful line work was used to describe the subject. Much of the original acrylic remains visible. This painting could be called contemporary or expressionistic. Something a bit different for me. I really enjoyed doing this one and like the results.

I was so inspired by the 1999 painting posted yesterday that I recreated a smaller version for today. It was very educational for me to study my past work so closely...there are several good concepts which I will 're-install' in my future paintings.

Cherry Tomatoes-Still Life

I was browsing around upstairs where my old studio used to be. I came across this painting from 1999. The more I looked at it, the more things I saw in it that I liked. I used to paint completely in acrylic...this painting represents one of my first endeavors to resume painting with oils. An artists style takes many twists and turns as influences are encountered through the years. I am constantly wondering am I responding to the best ones. I guess ya might say that I'm always in a state of re-appraisel of my work. Maybe I'll do a few more along this line.

Arctic Wolf-Wildlife Art

Oil on archival 9x12 canvas panel. Ta Dahh!! Here he is...completed. I darkened much of the background and areas of the foreground plus added a few new colors to the foreground. Then I worked on the arctic wolf itself by darkening the shadow side and adjusting edges.

Wolf-Work In Progress

Oil on 8x10 archival canvas panel. Very close to being done...but not quite there yet. I think the wolf itself is pretty well developed. The background and foreground need a little work. When I sleep on it and see it with fresh eyes, I might make a lot of changes.

I had a tough time getting the color right in the full size pic. The close up is nearer to being right but there's something a little off with the intensity of the chroma.

Dragonfly #3

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. I first created an abstract background using acrylic paint. Most of it remains visible. I then painted the dragonfly and its enlongated shadows with oils. Lastly, I raised the values in selected areas next to the dragonfly with oils.
By the way, this is the same model who posed for my previous dragonfly paintings. ;)

Sunrise Meadow-Landscape

Acrylic on 5x7 masonite. Thought I'd go back and revisit a style I used several years ago. This employs many layers of thinned transparent acrylic. The painting was then brought to a finish with thicker opaque lights. In this particular painting I pushed the value contrast and chroma.
