Range Warrior-Bison

 Close ups

Oil on a 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Sue did a great job of hosting this week and provided a bunch of terrific photos!

Years ago, I fell into painting a lot of bison/buffalo. They were a popular subject . It became a regular thing until I ran out of good reference photos. So it felt good to go back and revisit one of these ol' guys.

Thick paint...much of it applied by painting knife.

C&C welcome. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  1. I always love paintings of the buffalo... they are so amazing to me. I saw many when I was at Yosemite.
We had to stop many times on the road to let them pass. You painted this beautifully, Dean...love the colors and thick paint!!!!

I must admit, I think buffalo/bison make great subjects!

  2. Thank you for today's verse, Dean. I needed it. Love that gorgeous gold light on the bison's coat. What colors did you use to achieve that effect? And the amber waves of grain...The whole of this piece reminded me of school days when I was little and learning about our country, singing the songs...

    1. I know what you mean, Sherry....makes me want to break out in " America the Beautiful"!

The Lightest highlights are yellow ochre plus lots of Permalba white. A combo I use a lot.
The bit darker yellow is yellow ochre+ white+ a smidge of purple (ult. blue + alizarin crimson).

  5. This strong animal calls for a strong painting and this is just that. The blue touches vibrate against the ocher in a magical way.

  6. Wow, he looks larger than a mountain! Are they extinct, we do not know such animals over here, Dean! All the best for 2014, Regards from Cape Town.

  7. Marie....They're not extinct, but were mighty close to it. They used to roam the American plains by the millions. Were hunted for their hides to near extinction. A very saddening story.
