Sunspot
Acrylic on 5x7 hardboard.
The reference photo for this painting came from Mary for the WDE at Wet Canvas.
I first painted this work in standard acrylic. I felt the whole thing was way too dark. I reworked it with Golden Open Acrylics and widened the value range. It at least feels more sunny now. I maintained a lot of dark for a deep woods feel. Hope ya like it!

Like it...? I love it! I believe you bring awareness to the sanctity of our wildlife with your paintings Dean.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece from the wildlife.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors.
It is fantastic the way the sun peaks through and lights up the deer.
ReplyDeleteGreat job and wonderful light adjustment on your part.
Well done, Dean.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful painting of a precious creature Dean!
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate this composition! Having the trees in deep shadow suggests the depth and coolness of the forest. And then lifting the main theme out with the use of soft yellow light.
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful Dean! The forest is superb and I love that look on her face. I have a Greyhound and I've always thought he has a face much like that of a deer. I was right!
ReplyDeleteGreat job w/ the back lighting. And, so worth the effort to re-work it all.
ReplyDeleteI can almost hear the gunshot...
ReplyDeleteDon't worry - I'm vegetarian. He's safe with me.
Nice painting. It really does make me feel like I'm in the woods on top of a hunting stand.
Thanks for that wonderful comment, Sheila! The wildlife and concern for their shrinking habitat does occupy a place in my heart.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Irit!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Maria..It was pretty low key and drab until I turned up the sunlight in my second go.
ReplyDeleteI love when you tell us about the struggles--you salvaged this and improved it, I am sure. I love to hear about the struggles---because you make it look TOO EASY. lol. Nice piece. Makes me think of
ReplyDeleteChristmas, for some reason.
Thanks for looking, Edward!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Liz. God did beautiful work designing the deer, didn't He?
ReplyDeleteHi, Marie...thanks for such a thoughtful, meaningful, comment.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your time.
Hi, Autumn...I never thought much about it before, but there are great similarities between a greyhound and a deer. Glad you mentioned it.
ReplyDeleteThank you< Pam!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deb. I relied upon memory to come up with the feeling of time and place for this one.
ReplyDeleteI used to hunt a long while ago...but the love of woods and wildlife remains strong within me.
Hi, Celeste...The struggle IS to make it look easy...Lol!
ReplyDeleteHi Dean...although I don't do wildlife, this piece just grabbed me on first viewing. Such serenity and "innocence." God's creations are always wonderful and you've done a great job portraying that with this piece.
ReplyDeleteYour work always inspire me. I loved the composition. I can feel the forest smell! He is looking so conscious. Well captured! :)
