20/20 Jack-O-Lantern...Mouse

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Paint Your Pumpkin Challenge posted by Carol Marine .
She said: In the spirit of Halloween I challenge you to paint your pumpkin!

I combined her pumpkins...
With a mouse I found.

I confess...I love mice ( when they're not running loose in my house, that is)! The pumpkin looked like a perfect temporary residence for this little critter. Stray seeds are an extra benefit.

Dem Dere Eyes-Ringtail Lemur

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. June was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photo, June!

I liked the look in the little lemur's eyes. They seem open to so many interpretations....Dreamy...sad..angry...tender...Halloweenie.
I first prepared the panel with a coat of black gesso with a smidge of pthalo blue acrylic to make it really black. I love painting over this ground.

Hope you like it!

Fruit Of The Vine-Grapes Still Life

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas pad. Divided into 4 3x3 squares.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Ten Minute Challenge - Again posted by Carol Marine .
Link
The rules: Get a timer. Divide your canvas (I used a 6x6in piece of canvas pad) into small squares (or rectangles). They should be smallish - a couple or 3 inches square or thereabouts. Set your timer for 10 minutes. Paint your object in the first square. When the timer goes off - stop! Repeat until you are done. You can rotate your object and/or change the light for each new square.
paint just shapes and colors and values. Paint what you see- not what you THINK you see.

This is the second time they've ran this challenge. But it is very worth while and really should be repeated on your own many times!

Protective-Elephants

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Maureen was the hostess, and she provided a great group of reference photos.

I really liked the photo of the momma and her babe! Pictures of this sort always stir my emotions. To me this painting represents love, endangerment, the many times this scene has been replayed over thousands of years...A seemingly endless gamut of feelings wells up....But in the end, and in truth, it is a merely a small painting meant to capture the light in a scene.

Pink Barrette-Child Portrait

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Simplify Cute Challenge posted by Carol Marine.
Her instructions basically were to simplify a way too busy background. Then she said: "Feel free to change anything, crop, whatever. Have fun!"
So that's what I did..."have fun"!

I loved trying to paint the effect of the bright sun light on the girl.

Not exactly Vermeer's Girl With A Pearl... but Girl With A Pink Barrette was loads of fun to paint.

Cup O' Comfort-Hot Chocolate

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Jean, and she provided great reference photos.

The day here is dreary, very cool, and wet, so the hot chocolate seemed to be a perfect fit.

This is oil on a 6x6 canvas panel over black gesso. As a final step, to make the gesso truly black in the painting, I added a thinned Prussian blue on top of the exposed gesso in the background.

Spider Doing Pushups-Hand

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Hand Challenge posted by Shelley Ross.
She said, "The challenge this week is to paint one or both of your hands in a gesture - the Peace sign, Thumbs up, Hitching a ride, A-OK, or whatever hand pose moves you."

This is the "spider doing pushups on a mirror" which is ordinarily done against the opposing hand.
Just for kicks I photographed my hand doing pushups on a mirror. Whew!...Had to take a beer break after 25 reps....Hmmm...maybe I've been painting too long without working in some exercise?

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Scatty, and she provided great reference photos.

Something about ducks always seem happy and many times humorous.
I liked how these guys were gathered around eyeballing the main duck. They were either admiring him or were about to boot him from the flock for some ducky infraction.
