Wide Eyed And Alert-Rabbit

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Mary was the super host this week who provided a bunch of great photos!

 I cropped in for a close up on the rabbit. Loved those eyes!

For Mother's Day
Close ups

Acrylic on 8x10 mat board.
NFS

This painting was done in 2004 shortly after the passing of my wife, Kay. Roses were her favorite flower. Roses were also the favorite flower of my mother.

So I post this in memory of the two great greatest people who have ever resided in my heart.

The video is for all the Moms who have gone on.

I have re posted this video from Celeste Bergin's fine blog.

Flamboyant-Green European Woodpecker

 Close ups

 Foreground grass
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Robert was the host and provided a bunch of great photos!

 I have always loved birds ever since I was a young'un! This good looking green European woodpecker was a new species to me.

I enjoyed pushing the color in this one. I really had a good time experimenting with those foreground grasses.

C&C welcome. Thanks for taking a look and commenting!

Statue Admirer-Pigeon

 Close ups

 Standard acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Oty was the gracious hostess.

 Although these birds are scorned as a pest, I can't help but to admire the feather markings and shiny iridescent heads of pigeons. They are really a beautiful bird.

This is standard acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel. Basically the same process as the previous two weeks. Many layers of thinned acrylic over textured gesso.
I added a touch of black pen and colored pencil just to "kick up" a few spots.

C&C welcome. Thanks for commenting!

Evolution-American Crocodile

 Close ups

Acrylic on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Li was the gracious hostess.

 I chose this sunning American Crocodile.

This is standard acrylic on hardboard. I was happy with last week's painting, so I tried this one in the same manner. Black and gray gesso loosely blended with a painting knife...leaving the knife marks and a marbled gesso.Then I applied thinned acrylic of different colors in random patches. Did the drawing, then painted with many thin layers. I also used a Pitt Pen sparingly for emphasis in select areas. I tried to inject more color than the dull gray hide that was pictured.

I thought of how the croc has evolved and has been around for millions of years. I was thinking this as I watched the painting evolve under the brush.
Hope you like it.

Dawn Fawn-Wildlife

Above is the finished painting. The following demo will give you an idea of the steps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1
I wanted to show the fawn stepping out of the dark, shadowy woods into a spot of morning sun.
I sketched the deer and restated the main lines I didn't want to lose with a Sharpie. I then put in the darks using black gesso...sometimes with a touch of acrylic Thalo Blue for extra punch on the darks. The deer was shaded with a watery wash of the same. I was establishing (searching out) the values.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 2
Still working monotone with black gesso and a bit of acrylic thalo blue, I developed the fawn and foreground values.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 3
I added oils using knife and brush. I was ready to post this but felt something was wrong. finally I decided that I had held too much to the darker values in my attempt to illustrate the shadows from which the subject was emerging. I felt this image was drab looking.  At this stage is where I many times make the mistake of hurrying up and posting .....feeling some sort of pressure to just move on, and don't take the chance of overworking it. I'm glad I held off this time.
I used brush plus a painting knife. I really had fun with the color blends in the foliage and the ground.
I applied the extreme lights sparingly in order to mimic the sun striking selected spots.
Close ups
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo! Thanks, Jean!
I chose the wolf. I have done many in the past. Wolves are majestic, fearsome, beautiful, and heartbreaking all at once.
Too Hot To Trot-Squirrel
Close ups
This is the original lay in.
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Susan was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photos.
I liked the squirrel taking a break from the heat of the day. I've watched them do this many times. It looks like they're kicked back and really deliberating something.
This is oil on a 5x7 canvas panel. I first laid the darks in thinly...Then the mids with thick paint but smooshed ( a very painterly term )around a bit....Then finished with thick strokes from brush and knife. This gave a nice build up.
I hope you like it!
Locked On-Tiger
Close ups
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to The Up Close Animal Challenge at DPW posted by Taryn Day.
Taryn wrote: The challenge is to paint a close-up of an animal's face. Use the edges of your panel to crop or frame the face with a minimal amount of background space. Try and figure out what thoughts may be behind those non-human eyes.
I have always enjoyed painting animals' eyes! Eyes are the " Mirror of the Soul". The eyes of animals are actually capable of showing a range of expressions. Plus I had fun with all the colors involved in the coat of this tiger.
I hope you like it.
Well, this ol' girl is in a state of repose you wouldn't want to mess with. Just tip toe on by and don't bother her cat nap (queen sized).
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Li was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photos.
Li offered many beautiful reference photos.This one called out to me the loudest. The beautiful osprey! She found it on the ground with a broken leg and wing. With help, she managed to get it to a conservation group. I do hope it recovered to be flying again.
Not too much to say about this except I pushed color variety and used well loaded brush strokes. It was educational and enjoyable.
Winged Rainbows-Lorikeets
Close up
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Christine was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photos.
These colorful birds really appealed to me. I checked them out on the internet, and found that they're called Rainbow Lorikeets. I'd probably break my neck going for my camera if one ever landed at my feeder. But that's not too likely as they are native to Australia. :lol:
Some palette knife was used but this was done mostly with a loaded brush.
