Exploring The Floral-Flowers

 Close ups

 Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess.

I decided on the flowers. Actually, I used the reference as a springboard to get the painting started. From there on, I stopped looking at the photo and just developed it by playing with color and using the painting knife. A lot of fun.
I first applied black gesso...love that stuff!

I came up with a term which is completely my own invention! It's "artful departure". Ain't that a beaut??? It means don't let the subject source, whether real life or photo, get in the way of creating a painting. I think the duty of an artist is to create rather than replicate. But then, that's just my humble opinion.

Apples And Orange

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the gracious hostess.

I chose the still life because I felt this would be a good subject to continue with the thick, painting knife, technique I used last week.
First I used brush, then the paint shaper, then the painting knife.
I like the active looking surface this gives a painting. Plenty to look at.
I'm not really adept at this style of painting, but I think it would have great possibilities with practice.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting!

Roses

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Patricia was the gracious hostess.

I chose those roses this week. My goal was to play with broken edges. This was done by first using brushes...then a paint shaper to move paint and influence the edges...then painting knife. I like the resulting impressionistic and active surface this technique brought about.
This technique was developed by a very sharing blogger Julie Ford Oliver.

C&C welcome. Thanks for taking a peek and I appreciate your comments.

Flower Power-Wisteria

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess.
The reference photos were great. I really had a hard time choosing. The animals were very tempting...but wanting to try another floral, I picked the wisteria.

Tried to keep it expressive, painterly, and textured. Don't know if I succeeded, but it was fun trying.

Dragonfly

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Oty was the gracious hostess.

I took a stab at a dragonfly reference photo. My aim was to use thick, expressive, paint. Not too sure as to how successful I was. I invented a water lily bud for it to cling to and gave the background the general look of a lily pond.
Had to wipe the flower off completely once. Then I found it's difficult to show transparent wings against a dark background.
Anyhow I fiddled with it way too long, so here it is.
I would appreciate your input on this one.

Spring Memories-Lilac

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Donna was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo!

I just had to try those lilacs! I'm not a floral painter by any means, but I really like the Springtime feelings this flower generates. I have some in my yard and they're only there for about two weeks tops. You have to look fast and enjoy them for the short time they're around. Sort of a mini lesson on life in general.

This is on a 7x5 canvas panel. A little brush and a lot of palette knife!

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting!

This painting was influenced by the style of the great
innovative artist, Julie Ford Oliver.

Fruit O' The Vine-Grapes

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE  at Wet Canvas. Sharron was the hostess who supplied this great reference photo! Thanks, Sharron !

I was in the mood for more painting knife this week, and the grapes seemed to be just what I needed. My goal was to keep this super loose and to leave a lot of room for interpretation for the viewer.
I'm fairly satisfied with the outcome...(at least for now).
I owe much of this approach to that fine artist, Julie Ford Oliver.

Are You My Daddy?-Bulb Still Life

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to The Lightbulb Challenge at DPW posted by that really fine artist, Carol Marine.
The assignment: Find a light bulb. Paint it. Have fun with it! My kind of assignment! Thanks, Carol! :)

The title could very well be the burning question in many a little nite lite's mind.

I wanted to do this painting Fast and Loose! Something really desirable in paintings....not so much in significant others...Lol.
So I went with large brush..generous paint. Keep it moving. If I started to slow down to nit-pick at details I forced myself to move on!!
I like the result. Hope you do too! :)

Holding More Than Flowers-Vase

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to the Gift Challenge II at DPW posted by the extraordinary artist, Abbey Ryan .
Abbey suggested to paint something that you feel connected to or has meaning for you because someone gave it to you.
This is a simple little vase with Greek (I think) figures. My Mother loved the little vase, and now I love the many recollections it holds.

This is my contribution to The Shadow Challenge at DPW posted by Laurie Miller .
Laurie wrote: "Shadows can be really fun to paint. Find a subject with a dramatic shadow and make be sure to make the shadow an important part of your composition."
These challenges are exactly that! Really new subject matter for me which I really enjoyed once I was into it.
I enjoyed the contrast between the cool shadows and the warm stucco wall. I used the painting knife to provide the impasto of the wall.

Apple Patch-Green Apple

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Pare Down your Apple Challenge at DPW posted by Carol Marine .
Carol said: What is the smallest amount of information that still says "apple"? Your challenge is to paint an apple - any apple - in as few areas of color as possible, and still have it read as a 3-dimensional apple.

I called this painting "Apple Patch". It may be more accurately called 'color patches'. It was educational to record the color and value shifts as the form rounded away from the light source.

Crumpled Paper-Bonnet

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Crumpled Paper Challenge at DPW posted by Kim Rempel .
Kim's challenge: "Take a piece of paper, crunch it up, put it in a well-lit setting and paint! It's a great exercise to study shapes and relative values. I would suggest a plain paper in order to see value shifts more clearly. "

After crumpling the sheet of paper and throwing it on the desk, I saw an old-timey bonnet. Guess it's like seeing shapes in clouds.

This was done with the painting knife. A lot of fun laying the thick paint!

Vise grips getting a grip on vice.......
To me, a nice glass of Merlot is a great vice.
In order to prevent a drinking problem, i.e. dropping the drink, a pair of vise grips could be employed to get a secure grip on your vice. The danger is, this could crush the glass and cause a worse problem than ever.
