This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of great photos.

 I went with a couple on the beach. Intriguing to me thinking of all they've been through together.

I did another graphite mainly because of time constraints. This is approx. 6.5x5.5. I used colored pencil on the cups for surprise/shock value. Creates interest.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Valri was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of great photos.

Even though Valri and Mackenzie aren't officially blood related ( her fiance is the grandfather), I suspect a lot of love and bonding are in the offing. This just seemed like a great pair for a dual portrait.

Just a sketch in graphite and a wee bit of color pencil for variety and accent.
Approx. 6x6.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Patricia was the super host this week who provided a bunch of great photos! This is her brother who lives in Colorado. He looks as if he were right from a scene in Hollywood for a western movie....but he's the real deal!! He had great poise and facial expression in the picture. Perfect casting.

This was painted on a toned canvas. A favorite ploy of mine. Much of the background is the acrylic tone.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Joel was the super host this week who provided a bunch of great photos! This is his niece standing in the light of a window.

It has been a tradition of mine to commemorate Easter and other holidays on my blog with a painting. When I saw the pic with his niece in that special light, my choice was made!
I raised her face, closed her eyes, and added a cross to her hand.
Happy Easter, everyone....please don't forget the true meaning.

 I post this in the spirit of Christianity on this day of days.
Please use it as a gentle reminder to look beyond the decorated eggs...marshmallow peeps...and the chocolate bunnies. All of which are fun and a special delight to our children and the child within us.

But the true meaning of this day is the suffering which was willingly endured so that we could all be forgiven. Through His sacrifice and resurrection we are guaranteed eternal life. This perfect life which He promised appeals to the child within us...because we are indeed His children.

Also, please don't forget to pray for all those who are in the service of protecting us and for those who have given the supreme sacrifice.

 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

 This is Sue,. She was the hostess this week. I just had to try sketching her portrait. Loads of character and personality. The viewer can't help but wonder, "what is she thinking??".

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Marianne was the host and provided a bunch of great photos!

 The harpist appears to really be into what he's playing ....harp from the heart.
This is oil on a 5x7 canvas panel. I wanted to do it all in knife, but I kept chickening out in tight spots...so this is about 50/50, brush and knife.
I wish I had made the background a different value or different color for more separation. I just don't feel like investing more time into it.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Valri was the host and provided a bunch of great photos!

 This is in pencil with touches of warm brown colored pencil on Cotman water colour pad. It's approx 7x7. The hardest thing is in knowing when to set the pencil down and stop.

I tried to take a soft approach to this little girl's portrait. It can be very difficult to keep edges soft. I especially try to avoid hard lines in the features of a child. Easier said than done.

Li wrote: "My husband worked with our dear friend Lloyd for 7 years. He was a brother, a trusted friend and a loyal worker. When we moved to the Bahamas, he took us into his heart as family. He passed away suddenly in Aug. at the age of 53. I so wish I had taken more photos of him and Dave together but he was so humble and so very camera shy. We miss him every day.
Her description and photo of their friend, Lloyd, touched my heart. His expression fit so perfectly.

Though I have painted in this pad a few times, it's still comparatively new to me.
The girl is Felicity.... Felicity's gaze really spoke to me.

The old musician struck a chord with me. Here he is still entertaining after all these years. He has seen music evolve in person. I too played music for years until old Father Time caught up with me and said, "Whoa"! I have an older brother who's still playing shows!

Capt. Jim runs the tours on the original boat used in the film the African Queen, which has been lovingly restored in Key Largo, Fla. Here's the modern African Queen Captain setting off on another voyage. Loved the movie...it's one of my all time faves. Just the thought of those leaches on Bogey still make me squirm!!

This was done with a painting knife. I really enjoy the results of a knife painting. Strange.. I always have to push myself to get started on a knife piece.....probably because I'm so unsure of controlling a knife until I actually get into using one.

I went for the interesting Hawaiian chap who was weaving palm fronds into bowls! So much character in that face. This one reached what seemed a totally hopeless stage less than halfway into it. I swear the head looked like a lumpy mud ball, Lol! But I kept on painting spots of color...by the time I got to the lighter notes it made more sense. The color is from imagination. Here's the cropped photo I worked from.

Youthful Magic-Child Figurative

 This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Sharron was the gracious hostess.

I loved the youthful magic of Julia in the warming sun.
This is plain acrylics on a 7x5 hardboard.
I first prepared the surface with greyed gesso applied with a painting knife in order to get a knife painting texture. Then, I used the acrylics thinly in many layers. I accented selected contours with Pitt Pens.
This approach is all new to me, so that fact just added to the fun! I'm pleased with the outcome.
