Shade Hog-Lambs

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Gail was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of great photos.

I liked the grouping of the lambs in this one. Very interesting shadows on the lambs plus those cast on the wall.

Gail's challenge was to accentuate color in the manner of Vickie McMurry.

I looked up Vickie McMurry's art and loved it. So for the challenge, I gave my color a bit of a boost.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Gail was the great hostess. She supplied plenty of terrific reference photos.
One of her ref photos was of a whole flock of sheep. It was all too overwhelming for me, so I decided to pick one little lamb who was posing so nicely and make him the star of the flock. I placed him under the spotlight center stage and turned on the color. This is a style I used a lot in the past and it felt good to revisit it again!! I really had fun on this one.

The paint is kept thin for the darks and applied thickly for the lights.

This grazer just seemed really peaceful nibbling away in the sunshine.
I had fun laying it on thick in selected spots and pushing the color.

Veterans Day 2011

Some of you folks probably remember this painting from the past.
I always feel an overwhelming need to pay tribute to all those in service to this wonderful country. Honoring patriotism and God needs to take a high priority in these very trying times.

This painting of a praying soldier was done with love and in support of our troops. God bless them.

Sheep--Experimenting

Step #1

On 5x7 hardboard.
A mixture of black gesso and white gesso were roughly mixed to a middle gray. This was brushed on leaving well defined brush marks.
Using a soft, black, graphite pencil, I drew in the two sheep. The deep brush marks in the gesso clearly show up through the graphite. I like this effect because I feel it adds a harmonizing textural look.
Maybe I should have stopped right here and called it done...but I went on...

Step #2

In this step, oil paint was applied thinly with a brush and some was also rubbed in with a cloth. This gave it a soft, laid back, appearance.
Maybe I should have stopped here and called it done...but I went on...

Step #3

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
Just a few adjustments. Heighten some color...expand the value range.
Stick a fork in it...it's done!!! Of course I could continue to add to it...Thicker strokes! Richer color! Flowers! Weeds! A wolf hiding in the bushes!...NAH! Gimme that there fork!

Sheep- If At First You Don't Succeed

First Version-Friday

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
On Friday afternoon I was ready to post this on the WDE at Wet Canvas. But I was running late, so decided to post it today (Sat).

But all evening long on Friday, I was nagged by the feeling that the painting had fallen short of what I had originally intended.
So this morning, throwing caution to the winds, I attacked it by adding a lot of stronger colors.
I like it better now. Glad I had to wait til today to post it.
