In Control-Lion

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of colorful photos!

Had to try this King Of Beasts. It turned out to be more difficult than I had at first imagined.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Snack Time-Pig

 Close ups

 Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Athena was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of great photos!

I just couldn't resist the pig. They usually strike me as humorous critters. Dunno...might just be me.

This is oil on a 7x5 canvas panel. You can look down and see each phase of this painting. From the toning of the support with thinned alizarin crimson...to the sketch...to the thin layer of mid value colors...to the climax of the thick, bright, sun lit areas.
Hope y'all like it!

Menu Planner-Lioness

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Connie was the super host this week who provided a bunch of great photos!
Loved the intense gaze of the lioness. The big cats are fascinating.
This is oil on a 5x7 canvas panel. I pushed myself to take a more colorist approach on this one, and I really enjoyed it. I'm fairly happy with the result.

C&C welcome. Thanks for stopping in and commenting!

Progression shots

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Jean was the great hostess. Thanks for the terrific reference photos.

Thought I would post the progression shots. I really liked the markings and minimal background in the first step. Kinda wish I had kept that.

Crown Of Gold

Close up

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my submission to Saundra Lane Galloway's great blog, Art For Life. This month her challenge features super animal shots from the Denver Zoo. Come on , artists!! Join in! :)

I love painting the big cats!
The way in which the sun illuminated the outer edges of the lion's mane, I was reminded of a crown...and , well...after all...he is the King of beasts.

His Majesty

I wanted to try the same technique as my last post. Acrylic on hardboard. Drawn in ink with Pitt artist pen. Thin washes of acrylic...then thicker opaque layers to finish.
The image was supplied by Jean for the WDE.

African Lion

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
This lion painting was originally posted at the start of last year....Jan.20th, 07. I just pulled him from his lair on the shelf where he had rested for a year....added more paint and thoughtful color to him....and said, "time to go out and leave the nest". Although I feel a little guilty for my 'tough love' approach, I know it's for the lion's own good. He can't be gathering dust in the corner of my studio for the rest of his life...that's my job...heh.
